A smart move on your part and you have one of the best cameras for a wide variety of photography. This camera will not cause you to decide it is too much work to go out.

I think I have a perfect set up now. I have the Nikon z50 and three lenses(2 kit and the 18-140) for most parts of my hobby (scenery, architecture, street scenes) and with the RX 10iv for wildlife and nature, I think I will be very happy!

Thanks everyone for your ideas and support.

I've gone back to a bridge camera, and happy I made the choice. I'm 87 and know my limits.

Oh good! I was going on your final sentence in the opening, "I just hope I don’t have pangs of regret and envy when I encounter folks with those big, beautiful telephoto lens in the field.🥹"

All the best!

I think I prefer both "short" (we have to make room for the next generations!) and unpredictable. Predictable would be both scary and boring

I am also unable to hand hold the bigger larger lens, so I use the Sony RX 10 IV, the IQ is very good up to 500mm, I also use a Sony A6400 with a Sony 70-350 zoom lens, IQ is also very good, the weight of either camera is manageable, I photograph mainly birds or wildlife. Enjoy your photography which ever way you go and never look back.

It's not a failure, it's very good decision making!

I am a Nikon shooter and was excited to put the Tamron z 150-500mm lens on my z50. I was ready to do more wildlife and birds in flight photography until I spent some time with this beautiful beast….it is too darn heavy for me to hold still and I am not inclined to lug a tripod around when I get the urge to shoot some wildlife when I am close to nature. At 75 I admit I am not as strong as I’d like and holding that lens isn’t getting easier.

So I am returning it to Adorama today and exchanging it for the Sony cyber shot RX10 IV. I guess a bridge camera isn’t so bad….(right?)…..and it sure will make my sometimes forays into nature a little easier. I just hope I don’t have pangs of regret and envy when I encounter folks with those big, beautiful telephoto lens in the field.🥹

You might try a lightweight monopod. It won't steady the camera except in the vertical direction, but that's the most challenging part with a heavy lens.

I'm also an aging (77yrs.) Nikon shooter and often shoot handheld with the 200-500mm. While there's very few answers to the weight issue (other than hiring a Caddy), one can always raise the ISO and shutter speed to prevent any shake from spoiling the image. When shooting sports, I'm at a minimum of 1/1,000 sec. Of course I see that you have already made your decision.

By the way, getting old is not a failure. It's preferable to the alternative.

I certainly can't give you any advice. But, would lugging around the heavy camera/lens and tripod take the fun out of your excursions? Maybe a lighter rig would be better for you, only you can answer that. But be grateful for the health and strength you have.

I'm 77 and when I found out that the Tamron 200-500 was really hard to hold I decided to make a stock for it. I took a pattern from a crossbow, sandwiched two 3/4th inch pieces of plywood, and cut out the pattern. Made it look a lot like a gunstock. I mounted a tripod head from a cheapie to the top. I then drilled it for a trigger button so I could hold the stock with two hands. I then picked up a cheap gun strap, mounted that and had myself a new tool for steadying the lens. Don't give up on your desires before you explore all the remedies. Good luck.

Sounds as if you might want to be careful where you take something like that. Particularly in public places. Might be OK in TX but not in NYC or SFO.

Very clever on your part. Hope there aren't any police around when you're out shooting. They might mistake your device for something else.

Did you consider Micro 4/3?
