To use it is to buy it. So why would I buy something I find completely distasteful ? Whatever its imaging competence might possibly be is really meaningless for me. Portability is easily had in friendlier, and functionally more useful, packaging.

Acoarst ! Im not into useless suffering.

I have used distasteful gear where my paycheck depended on it. And theres no denying that I see Hawgsters lusting for various cameras I am glad I left behind. Company cameras can be too similar to company vehicles.

Maybe he hasn’t “USED” one, but he’s not wrong.

The electronic zoom is a blessing !....Yes, I thought the same as you when I first started using it - you need to use it more and think about it - like I did.

I’ve been using it pretty often for 3 years. It has not improved. I much prefer the manual zoom on my 189-600 that gets me through the entire zoom range in 1/4 turn.

Man, can I ever relate to that sentiment. My mantra for newbies has always been to use the right tool for the job. It's not always the "best" tool there is. Sometimes it's the lowliest screwdriver in the tool box. Good tools make it more fun, but only if they fit your moment AND improve the results.

No viewer has ever cared what gear I used. If they liked the thing I made, whatever it was, they simply liked it.

Maya Angelou once said that people will remember how you made them feel, first. So make them feel all you can. Gear is only a means to that end. Don't let gear get in the way of what you have to show and say.

My main DX lens has both electric zoom and a good rotary zoom both by wire. Im 100% sure I have nevvvvuh used the "T-W" zoom switch.

Acoarst someone is ready to ask if I never use it then how can I hate it. I do have a despized kit lens that has *only* a switch. Ive secured two earlier kit lenses with normal mechanical zoom, less wide end, less compact, but very much easier and faster to use.

-------------------------------------------------

If I need a "pocket" camera, I will still use the nasty little PZ pancake. Its OK for use at both ends of the zoom range. Its simple to hit both ends but finding the framing in between is too slow and fussy. So, its a dual FL lens, 16 and 50. I seldom really *need* a pocket camera, so its OK like that.

Well the RX10MIV can also be zoomed by wire if you turn the zoom ring, but it lags and it takes a lot of turning. Not good if you’re shooting any kind of action.

The RX zooms by fingertip with one hand right next to the shutter release - it could not be easier or faster ! It may not be perfect - but does work quite well for ME.

No way it’s faster than a quick twist of my wrist and no where near as accurate.

I guess not all of us have your level of equipment or money to spend on it .....

Yes, I have an internal zoom that I can zoom with the tip of one finger - the Sigma 100-300 f4 - it is still not as convenient and in the end any faster than the RX10 .....

IMHO taking 3 bodies for travel photography is overkill. I have the 1.4 convertor and never use it. If you rent the R7, be sure to bring the adaptor and an extra battery. As the R7 is APS-C you'll get the reach you need without resorting to the 1.4 adaptor. Personally, if I were to rent, I'd rent the R5 as the higher resolution gives you more cropping capability which is helpful for wildlife photography.

Not really, since the R7 is 33mp and already cropped. The R5 is 17mp in crop mode. Barely more than half.
