External Hard Drive issues

I have a 4GB external G-drive that just started showing this screen. "The volume does not contain a recognized file system.
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."
Then it will ask you to format it which I don't want to do because I know there are pictures on it."
Any suggestions? I have goggle it but haven't found a solution that works yet. Thought I'd ask the hoggers here.

You didn't happen to unplug it before you either ejected or dismounted the drive I hope.
That usually corrupts the drive.

You can try an app like this from Wondershare. A quick Google search will turn up all sorts of hard drive recovery software.
P.S. I do not use Windows so I have no idea if this is a good, bad, or just so-so application.

Here are a link to data recovery software and reasons why a drive might malfunction. Perhaps one reason might jog your memory as to what you did to correct the situation before.
I have an older recovery software program as well as a more heavy-duty program that have performed well for me:

I once formatted by mistake one of my 14 TB WD hard drives and recovered everything exactly to a second 14 TB WD hard drive with Exxxxx.

Another possibility is that your drive has a proprietary file system, and that you have accidentally deleted the proprietary driver needed to access files on it. Have you recently did any file system cleanups? I suspect an anti-virus tool might think said driver was a bad-boy and remove it. I should hope that the install disk would contain a manual with a file manifest, and you could see if something is missing from your computer's file system.

Then try it again
Many programs want you to "Eject" the drive before you disconnect it.
Otherwise there may be "remnants" remembering otherwise.

You can get 8 to 10 years out of a drive if you use it like I do for photography. An SSD is my choice now with no moving parts. Waiting fora 10 TB with a low price till them Wirrrlll.
