I like my 18-200 on my D7200 for my walk around lens. It’s rated as good quality for the price. Adorama has a used one for $200.

For the DSLR DX body, Nikon offered the 18-300 mm lens, lightweight, compact, reasonably priced new, used in great shape (KEH.com, or MPB.com)…$350~$380.

VR …Nikonese for vibration reduction is an offering under different names by different manufacturers. Caveat…If you plan to do any shooting with a tripod, it will need to be turned off.

First, I liked the shots you posted (the alligator looks hungry). Next, I purchased a Nikon D7000 kit a number of years ago that had a Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR lens. I also had the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses but frankly I never used them as I did not like to change lenses too much when I was out shooting. So the 18-200 worked well for me. It can be found in good condition fairly inexpensively, and it might fill your needs currently. The 18-300 is also popular but significantly more pricey. Best of luck as you continue to shoot and keep posting your shots.

Good idea and low cost. The OP doesnt need or isnt quite ready for really looooong zooms.

He delivered a great "swampscape with bird" image waaaaaay more interesting than the boring "bird portraits" that just clutter up the forum. I can mentally wander around in that spooky swampscape almost like Im there :-)

My walkabout lens is a Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 on a Nikon D5500 (cropped sensor) camera. It takes care of 99% of my images (I have a wider-angle Nikon) and I recommend it. IIRC, it is discontinued and therefore be available at a good price.
