Small Plane - Big Wind

Strong gusts stopped this small plane that was attempting to land. Don't be misled by the appearance of the propeller. That's a camera thing.

Storm Isha occurred in the UK. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/22/uk-weather-storm-isha-causes-power-cuts-and-travel-chaos-amid-99mph-winds

We landed a Cessna on a small town runway against a strong cross wind a few years back. I'd swear the plane landed at about 45° to the runway; probably closer to 20-30° but still a little scary!

Any landing you can walk away from with the aircraft intact…

I was a private pilot in Piper Cherokee about 46 years ago. Forgotten much, but remember some. As I recall, when doing a cross wind landing, you come in on final with the plane aimed and angled towards the wind so the plane is aligned with the runway. Then at the last moment before touchdown, you'd straighten the plane to the runway. Is this still the correct procedure?

Right. There are lots of videos of the big airliners landing like that.

We stayed in Cornwall for two weeks years ago. Excellent! There are quite a few videos online showing crashing waves like that in England. Do you know about cornwallcam.com? Whoops! It shut down. That gave me the idea to start catskillcam.com. I ran it for a few years, but I lost it somehow. I could start another one with a similar name - but I won't.

A really good and steeled pilot who knows, and is at one, with his plane.

The best emergency landing of a King Air with gear up.

Smart! If he had lowered his landing gear, he wouldn't have gotten all that attention for a tricky landing. Some people will do anything for attention.

It’s when you’re a passenger in the back of the bus, you look out the window on final approach, and you see the whole length of the runway that you wonder if you’ve got clean underwear in your luggage!

It’s a little less scary when you’re the driver. But not much!

Or when you’re a passenger and on landing seeing the runway lights change color knowing you have less than 2,000 feet to go and you’re still going REALLY fast
