A year ago my computer guru updated my Win 8 laptop to Win 10. I started uploading my programs to it and discovered that the cursor had gone awry. It constantly jumps and is impossible to get focused on anything. That made the laptop unusable.

I have an external mouse and keyboard on a USB wireless. I exchanged them, same problem. I unplugged the USB to use only the internal mouse. Same problem. I told my guru, and he merely grimaced and really didn't want to do anything. I asked a friend who gave me some steps to do, but unfortunately I didn't write them down and now I forget. It was something about uninstalling the mouse, shutting the computer down, rebooting and letting it look for new drivers to install. But I'm not sure of all the steps. Can someone give me detailed instructions in plain English?

First, unplug any other USB devices except the mouse
Next, right click on the start button and choose settings. Click on “updates and security”, then “troubleshooting”. Then double click on “hardware and devices” and then “run the trouble shooter”. Did that fix the issue?

If not, Right click on the start button and choose device manager from the list
When device manager opens, choose “mice and pointing devices” choose the USB mouse and then uninstall. After it’s uninstalled, unplug the USB mouse “reciever” and then replug it. It should disappear and then reappear in the device manager mice section.
Choose update driver, and also under mouse properties uncheck “enable device precision” and let the update run.
Then restart the computer - is the problem fixed? If not AND the mouse works, go back into device manager and disable the track pad. Is the problem fixed? If not, return here for more advice

Check your Mouse Resolution.
Check Memory. W8 was spec @ 4gb.
10 is happy on 16.

Indeed. We had a Win 10 machine at the company I consult for with 4GB DRAM. Useless

How's the mouse battery. I've had the same symptoms due to a weak/dead battery.

I bet this is will do it. A while back before, my bromance with my Wacom, I checked that box believing that “precision” would make it easier to control the mouse while editing. And it just went nuts! Precision NOT!

Sounds like a driver needs an update.
Windows usually install any drivers detected that need updating at the same time but often don't include either less common ones or ones where the manufacturer of the bit of hardware involved hasn't kept up.
I suggest you do a scan of the computer of all drivers to see which may be due for an update. You may find more than just the keyboard/mouse that are out of date.

check the mouse settings you may have the cursor speed and or roll the mouse set too fast.

Responding to all: I've done the update thing, and it says it's up to date. My friend thought perhaps the driver was lodged in a bad spot in the drive. Uninstalling it totally and downloading and reinstalling would put it on a better piece if the drive

There were several steps, and it's those steps I'm looking for.

Good Idea.
as per prior post from Jack.

Too MUCH resolution can be hard to manage.

Follow the steps I outlined in a previous post in order. That will (1) run Windows troubleshooter (2)completely uninstall and reinstall the mouse (3) remove the precision setting and (4) resolve any conflict with the trackpad.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, return and we can do so more in depth troubleshooting.

Easiest first step is delete the mouse driver. Leave the mouse connected tho. Shut down computer, restart. Windows will look for the missing driver and should then install it. If it doesn’t, go to the muse/keyboatd web site, look for the driver there and install it. I would recommend not going to a ‘sponsored’ website. Check you are in the real manufacturers site.
Good luck.

I can tell you that I have a friend who I tutored long distance in photography, He bought a new windows Laptop, and started having the Jumping cursor problem. Dell sent someone to his house and they could not fix it. It took 2 months but they agreed to refund his money. He bought a different brand windows machine, and had the same problem. This sounds impossible to me , there has to be a fix, but he told me to google Windows Jumping Cursor problem. So I did and got about a billion hits. Some people claiming to have fixed it.
I am a Mac person so was no help to him. I know he was paying for Geek squad to come to his house again.
But Good Luck
I hope you have better luck than he did.

I will just add that the Geek Squad would not be my choice for a computer professional. Better to find a user admin or system engineer from a major company with Microsoft certifications/credentials that moonlights on the side
