Try a reboot - that should clear the caches and reset the system - or a complete shutdown and restart. It could be that another program is running in the background using up your memory. I’ve had that happen with my systems and have learned to shutdown and restart at least once a week.

Thanks, that did the trick -- somewhat. The photo thumbnails are now visible but it takes several seconds to populate. In the past, they would instantly pop up. I think I will do another reboot and maybe whatever is still slowing down the computer will get washed out. I have 16 gb. of ram and that has seemed sufficient until recently. I think I will look at what I've downloaded recently and see if there is a program that runs in the background. I may have to eliminate some recent programs.

The computer itself should be fine. Mine was 12 years old when I replaced it.

Are the files on the <your> local network or the PC.

Going from PP to a file on one of several external drives. A reboot helped but the system is still slow.

What kind of anti virus software you have on your computer?

Yea, I usually re-boot first when things get wonky.

Are you running an anti-virus (AV) program?
Sometimes when they check things they eat up a lot of resources and slow things down for a bit.
Might want to have it do a scan if you have an AV program just for kicks & giggles.

I did a second reboot and now the thumbnails pop up instantly! I think I will do a weekly reboot and that should help in the future!

A setting or something was switched on or off, or there is something else going on with the computer that I don't understand. When looking at photos on my hard drives I would see a thumbnail of the photo. Now the only thumbnails that appear are the older ones that were already on that drive. Any new photos I add show up only as a logo marker and not the actual thumbnail. Please take a look at the two photos posted below. I know this has happened before when a photo was added that did not have the proper .jpeg or .raw suffix but in one of the photos you can see the image is identified as a .jpeg. I have tried several settings but have not found anything to fix this.

Thanks to anyone who can assist with this.
A setting or something was switched on or off, or ... (show quote)

First please refer to this post which will show you how to capture a portion or all of your screen.

Keep in mind any AV program.......
If one was running, re-booting probably stopped it.

Mine wanted to go check external drives if they are connected by default. I turned that option off.
It used a lot of CPU resources and is not necessary in my case.

If the problem repeats and you suspect a background program is hogging resources, hit ctrl-alt-del and select performance monitor. It will show you what applications are running and what resources are being used. You can then end the offending application and take steps to delete it permanently.

Whenever I reboot a computer I shut it down then unplug if for about 30 seconds so any residual stuff goes away then restart, I do that weekly.

I only re-boot mine when it gets wonky or if our home network can't see the drives on it, I never unplug it.
