While I was still teaching, someone suggested a state law/program training volunteer teachers to carry as School Police Reserves. Los Angeles Unified School District had the third-largest PD in LA County, behind LAPD and the County Sheriff's Dpt. I told our campus Police Officer that if it went through I would volunteer-so did several other veterans on staff. The Auto Shop teacher was already a Reserve Sgt in his home city PD and had written orders from his Chief to carry 24/7 to help protect his students etc.
Well, that plan fell apart. The anti-gun members of the school board(s) all over the state freaked out and the state legislature killed the idea. But our campus Cop told myself and the other veterans who had said we would volunteer that he carried two small hidden backup guns and if something happened at school or an event we were to find him and the first two to arrive would get one of his backups and work with him until the crisis was over.
Well, Thank God, nothing like that ever happened.
