The west side of the N.P. has more/wider access to landscapes.
# 4,5 and 6 is what happens when a theft of a Saguaro goes bad!
There was a 1/4 full whiskey bottle laying in the grass next to the Down and Dead Saguaro. Probably attempted at night and the thieves' beat feet when they realized it missed the trailer bed.
This guy was probably 150 years old!

We don't get to see them fallen over very often, Chief. Thanks for the tour.

Hmm, is forensic photography in your future, Chief? What a shame. Are they attempting to steal the whole plant, or is there some commercial value in it?

My pleasure, Ken. No, not often. And this one looks pretty recent, still green anyway!

Thank you. Yeah, the only one laying on the ground that I have ever seen. Recently felled with big, healthy ones standing all around him. Pretty sure that it wasn't a natural incident! Tire tracks around it going back to the nearby road, and the whiskey bottle laying there.

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, I hope so too, but not likely! This guy was pretty close to the road but hard to see from the road. If they had figured the direction of the fall right, they would have got a couple thousand dollars for it. In and out pretty quickly. Full sized Saguaros are highly prized as lawn ornaments! If they did get caught, the penalties are pretty stiff.

No, probably not, GreyOwl. Yes, a full grown Saguaro is worth pretty good money in the illicit landscaping business. But I don't think the guys that I suspect did this are very professional. I think it was a snatch and grab job. The Saguaro are pretty tough and it looks to me like they had enough root that it might grow when transplanted.
Yes, it's a shame, especially in a National Park!
