Nikon's new 400mm 4.5 Z lens tested - and other Nikon telephotos compared

I have a special affinity for affordable/carryable 400mm prime lenses (sub - $3.5K and sub 5 lbs.) especially in conjunction with crop frame bodies = 600mm equiv. FOV ....and most take 1.4X for 840mm equiv.

The Nikon 400 4.5 Z is the first AF "affordable"/carryable 400 prime in their history ! Canon has had the 5.6L and DO 400's for quite some time. The 400 DO 1st version has only become "affordable" used recently. Sony has NONE in this category and no modern third parties either ! (Sony does have the Minolta 400 APO f4.5 in screw-drive A-mount )

https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikor-z-400mm-f-4-5-vr-s - and scroll down to see the Imatest number comparisons with ALL other Nikon super teles. Nikon has really stepped up their game with all their latest teles !

My take away is the 400 4.5 Z may be only slightly behind some of the others in resolution but IS the smallest/lightest for it's focal length ......much smaller/lighter than even the Canon DO !

NOW, Nikon just needs a GOOD/affordable 24 MP APSC Z body to go along with this 400 !

Love my Nikon 400mm f/4.5. Not sure Nikon will bring out a 24 MP APSC Z body that will focus as well as the Nikon Z8. But the D500 when it was released in 2016 was $2,000. The Nikon Z6 iii will likely be about $2,500 (price hasn't been announced yet). Assuming the Z6iii can focus as well as the Z8, it could be an alternative though it is a full frame and about 20MP. But together with the 400mm f/4.5 will take some great pics.

I do wish Sony would consider a light 400 f/4 e mount G Master. I think it would a winner.

Sigma is now making a small/light 500mm 5.6 for the E-mount !

Looks like a great addition to the Sony lens line-up! Love my Nikon 500mm f/5.6.

The more I think about this, the more it BOTHERS me that Nikon made the 400 4.5 a Z lens - they COULD have just as easily made it a F mount so it could be used with the D500 .....! ! and mirror less with adapter instead of mirror less ONLY - part of their market scheme I guess to sell more mirror less 8-(
