Two nights ago I did a gig at a Chamber of Commerce event at a very high end community center. I was hired by the chamber, as was a social media guy, and a video guy. There was also an independent person taking photos. What we all had in common (and this has never happened before!) was we were all using Sony equipment. Now I know this will ruffle the gentle feathers of so many on this blog, but the reality is that market share is everything, and I as a Sony shooter am even amazed at how much is changing in the professional sphere. Years ago it was rare to find a pro shooting Sony, and now it seems that we are the majority. For there to be four image makers at an event and all of them using Sony had me pretty shocked. People vote with their feet and their money, and the other brands have to be on notice to up their game.

Some of the bigger professional organizations that require more consistency from their photographers have indicated they need to use Sony. And there are good reasons for such. But that is for the professionals. The sales in Japan to the public is a different story. A collection of the sales records of over 50% of the camera stores showed only one Sony and it was not the top seller. There were three Olympus/OMDS cameras and not one was the OM-1. And Fuji's APS-C I believe was ahead of both the Sony and Olympus/OMDS cameras. This takes nothing away from Sony which is considered one of the best professional cameras. Different levels of cameras for different levels of photographers.

But there will be some photographers that will buy a Sony and there will be some "photographers" that will show you that they own a Sony. It is the same for any other brand. I know there are photographers that even buy the latest and greatest 4/3rds Panasonic or OMDS just because they can.

For sure. Listen, I will never part with my Olympus OMDEM-5ii because of its rugged and lightweight travel ability. Every tool has its negatives and benefits. But for work - it is Sony!

That was a few years back when Canon and Nikon were just getting their feet wet in the mirrorless realm and the AP switched to Sony because they had the only pro level cameras suitable for journalism that also did pro level video. Since then the AFP, (Agence France-Presse), collaborated with Nikon during development of the Z9.

Just thought I'd drop in to see all the regulars on this tiresome brand-watch. <sigh>

Oh with Associated Press exclusively using Sony gear for all its staff photographers and videographers worldwide, you can be sure there will be many Sony A9III, A1, A9II shooting at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, along with Sony shooters from Gannett Media and foreign media.

As Canon fanboys dont want you to know, the Top News Services in the world, including Associated Press; Canadian Press; UK's Top News Service, all Gannett Media including USA Today have ALL moved exclusively to Sony mirrorless gear for all their staff photographers and staff videographers, worldwide, just a fact.

AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9 and they use Nikon Z9/Z8 for their staffers.

None of these top professional News Services chose Canon mirrorless for their staffers, none, just a fact.. Stringers/freelancers use whatever brand gear they personally own.

Full disclosure, the 25 staff photographers of the Los Angeles Times Newspaper do use Canon mirrorless, and they should have a least one or two shooters credentialed to cover the Super Bowl, as the 49ers are a California team.

There will be Canon shooters at the Super Bowl, but there has been a real monumental change among professionals around the world. Canon still dominates the DSLR market, but Canon does NOT dominate or lead the mirrorless market, just a fact.

All I can say is that I have too much money invested in Canon lens to ever change. Of course, I'm not a pro just an amateur that's been taking pics for over 50 years. For some unknown reason I started with Canon; don't know how many I have and I'm too lazy to go count them but I suspect over a dozen. (I'm 93 and I don't thiink that I could list them all from memory if my life depended on it.) Harry

More power to you Harry. I am 72 and have used Nikon , Canon , Leica, Hasselblad and many other brands for over 40+ years, and moved over to Sony back in 2017, and have never looked back.

Use what you have, what you are familiar with and what is long paid for, and be happy.

No one is saying anyone has to switch brands.

Cheers and best to you.

Actually, the latest 2024 top sales figures from Yodabashi camera stores, and other top camera stores in Japan show more Sony models in the top ten in sales in Japan than any other brands. I have separate threads here in UHH that list the sales figures in Japan, for the year of 2023 and for now in 2024. Please check those out and be accurate here.

Cheers and best to you.
