For my son's birthday, I want to get him some of those key tracker tags. Looking at reviews, they all have plusses and minuses. Many of them are described as being too quiet, and some are limited to one brand of phone. I'd appreciate comments about good and bad experiences you've had with them.
My wife uses one called "tile". It has come in handy a few times.
It is a little fob about the size of .50 cent piece that connects to the item you would like to find if lost.
So how do they work, like a Geiger counter???

What kind?
Some use cell phones, and some use a separate "Finder" device. Losing that Finder would make the whole system useless.
Volume would be important, I think.

Bluetooth, maybe.
Does it beep, send up a flare, raise a flag?
Or say "getting warmer...".

It should explode or burst into flames. 😂
From what I've read, they all beep - some loud and some low.

Fireworks...
Gotta be some directionality to it though.

I have about 8 Apple Air Tags. I put them in my 2 cars, some luggage, laptop case, with my car key Fob, and keys.
They beep, but I don’t know how I’d hear them if they’re in my car while it’s traveling down the highway.
I’d like to see more pinpoint accuracy but, for now, it’s what I got.

My daughter uses Apple Air Tags and she loves them - puts them in their luggage, cars, backpacks and even gave some to her kids to use. They're all Apple users and have all the Air Tags connected to all they’re iPhones - they like that they can track each other when traveling - gives them a sense of security.
I asked about reliability and she said in the states it is generally no issues. She’s mentioned in the remote locations and in the mountains (they live in Colorado) while hiking, they don’t work to well as the tags don’t have any devices to connect to. Also, overseas she’s lost connection with them a few times.
Here is an article on how they work:

We use the iPhone Air Tag for our luggage when we travel.
It gives us peace of mind when you can track luggage within the airports and "See" your luggage on the plane when you board.
There are many, MANY uses for them but we just use them when we travel.
I can keep up with my keys, thank you.
