I just went to use my Nikon SC -29 cord with lighting asssist, and found the cord where it fastens to the camera hotshoe unit's insulation sheath has failed, exposing the inner wiring for about an inch and a half. Is it worth it to have it repaired, , or just buy another? Fortunately, I have some other cords that will serve, but none with the lighting assist.

We had the same issue with the phone charger cord. We used the plastic that you shrink around the cord and wires. It worked great.

NikonUSA's website has a section dedicated to support and repairs. Some accessories are repairable, some are not. If you go there, you can find out what is repairable and what is not. The repair centers charge a flat fee of $17.50 to return your repaired items, so even if the SC-29 is repairable, it may make more sense to buy a new one.

Thanks for the suggestion...that's the first thing I thought of, but the ends are too large to fit heat-shrink tubing over. I sort of think a new cord may be the only practical answer.

A braided copper lining that is between the outer plastic/rubber? sheath and what appears to be a layer of insulation is the only thing exposed. Never heard of heat shrink tape. Will check at my friendly corner Ace Hardware and see if they have it. Thank you!

Amazon has a replacement cord made by Neewer fro 23 dollars. I have had good luck using Neewer productors and a lot cheaper than Nikon prices https://www.amazon.com/Speedlite-Compatible-SB-5000-Cameras-Flashes/dp/B09ZTN9JC4/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2TTEK5XT3PGDZ&keywords=SC-29+Ttl+Coiled+Remote+Cord&qid=1705660831&s=electronics&sprefix=sc-29+ttl+coiled+remote+cord%2Celectronics%2C242&sr=1-2

Adorama has it for $100. You can get it used for about $60. Who is going to repair it for $100?

I have used a product called Bondic to repair frayed cords. It is activated with a UV light that comes with the kit. It makes for a very solid repair. Good luck!

Bondx will work; however, a roll of black, or several other colors, electrical tape is less than $10.00 and a good tight wrap, the tape is slightly stretchy, is as good as shrink wrap.

You can use it as is but it's not easy to repair. Simply put some tapes around it?? Anybody who say he/she repair it must at least cut out the bad section and reconnect the connector which I think is near impossible because the connectors are molded in. So it's a simple decision if the choice are buy another or have someone repair then the choice is to buy another.
If the OP choose to simple keep using it as is or put some electrical tape around it I wouldn't say anything but you don't have to hire someone for that.

I recommended the Heat shrink tape because it will stay on longer than regular electrical Tape because the ends always start coming loose after very little use.
The conductors in those small cables are a thin copper ribbon wrapped with some very fine strands of something and are all but impossible to soldier> Been there tried that<
