Will Nikon do this, or am I waiting for something that will not happen?

I will wait until Nikon releases the Z8 II with dual cf express cards and then swoop in for the current z8 (hopefully on the cheap). Love the Z7, but dual cards is always a comfort.

To each there own. I take 1000's of photos each year of action sports shots, specifically soccer since I have two grandkids that play for their high school teams. Parents and players all tell me that I share great photos. As to birds, I take them too, all with my Fujifilm X-T3.

The Z50 is as good as the D500 or you can put your Z8 in DX mode and achieve the same effect.

The Z50 packs a lot as it is for the price, but can be easily enhanced by Nikon to make it really competitive - IBIS, 24mp, BSI/stacked sensor, global shutter (?), dual Expeed -7 or maybe -8 processors, advanced AF modes, 20-30 fps full RAW, pro-capture mode, and maybe more. The rumored Z90 or Z50ii is supposed to be something of this sort. If this Z90 becomes real it will be a wildlife/birding/sporting beast in the likes of the D500, and then I would consider the Z ecosystem "complete" and "well rounded." We'll see! Happy New Year!

Nikon does make a camera with a cropped sensor it is the ZFC not the ZF since I picked up the ZF I have not touched my Z8 Z9 none of them.

The Zf has been getting rave reviews by youtube photography channels. It is a portent of what's to come for the Z6iii soon, in the modern skin of the Z cameras.

Z90 (DX) will be out before fall but a New Z7iii (FX)will be out in 2025 with very impressive attributes. Cheers.

Conjecture, wishful thinking, fact?

I must admit, I love my D800's (yes 3 of them), but the light weight and picture quality of the Z7ii IR with magnetic filters and a screw on "Cut Filter" to capture visible light is a great camera. If the new Z90 or Z7iii (3) can be even slightly better I'll be selling something to put one of these babies in the bag.

I currently am using a z8 and z6ii but am hanging on to the D500. I would like to go all in for mirrorless but Nikon so far hasn't built a replacement for the D500. I like using the 500 with a longer lens since it turns the 200-500 into a 300-750. The z crop sensor cameras are not a replacement in my opinion but more of an entry-level camera. Does anyone think a more professional/enthusiast crop sensor body is likely?

If you have a Z8 then you already have a D500 replacement. Simply shoot in DX mode and you will get the advantages of DX for your lenses and will still retain something like 19.5MP - basically the same as the D500.

The only reason Nikon would need to make a D500 replacement is for people that cannot afford a Z8 or Z9 - since you can you definitively do not need another camera to do what you are looking to do.

Sadly, the manufacturing economies of scale have made full frame cameras only very slightly more costly than APSC - which is very different from the early stages of the digital age when APSC was SIGNIFICANTY cheaper to produce.....and the weight savings/size of the body is also negligible now also.

I have the poor man's D500, the D7500, and I absolutely love it! It is basically a D500 on a diet, yes the D500 is the better camera, but not for picture quality, but user advantages, i.e. two card slots, slightly higher fps with a kick ass larger buffer, and some other creature comforts. The overall specs though are darn close for the money, size and weight savings. So I agree with you, someday I would like a Z8 but I'm hanging on to my 7500 too....

Just my humble opinion.

I really don't know. In the beginning when they introduced the Z series I thought they were done with APS-C sensor but then they introduced the Z50, Z30 and the Zfc.

The pixel pitch of APSC @24MP tends to bring out the best in GOOD lenses.....this would take about 57MP in full frame. 32 MP on APSC tends to max out most lenses and begins to show more motion blurring.....
