After years of using my favorite M43 Camera the Olympus OM-D E-M5 II which I said I would never replace I came across an OM-D E-M1 II for a really good price and as it came with the box and other stuff along with a Sigma 30mm f2.8 I went for it.

Wow, what a camera this is, I am now torn about selling on the Sigma lens but after taking a few shots with it it is incredibly sharp and, well, it's a weird focal length that doesn't fit well with what I do. It's a light plastic lens with a metal mount and it rattles when not connected to a camera that is switched on and was wondering if I should just sell it on or keep it just in case?

It's a Sigma 30mm f2.8 EX DN and made for M43 and another format which I can't remember for the life of me.

Has anyone else had any experience with this Sigma lens?

Now you already have the Sigma lens... You are not going to reap a fortune selling it so why not just keep it for the time you need that special focal length ? You said it was super sharp !

Its physically kinda oversize for an f/2.8 MFT normal lens and theres nothing very special about 30mm, unless 20% over normal really rocks your yacht.

The 25/1.8 Zuiko is a gem. Its tiny, doesnt rattle, and is almost wallet friendly on the used market (altho brand new its $400). The Lumix 25/1.7 is currently only $150 at B&H, small but not tiny and that price should ease the pain of getting very little return on the Sigma. (Im very happy with several Sigmas but was never tempted by that 30mm.)

I use both of those 25s each on its matching brand of camera. For the E-M1II it would be great to get the tiny Zuiko but the Lumix 25 will not disappoint.

Theres no reason to keep a rattling Sigma, unless acoarst youre into Latin percussion ;-)

Its a good cheap f:2.8 normal lens from the APSC format which has been remounted for MFT. With all its edges and corners cropped away by the slightly smaller MFT sensor, its dressed to impress (as youve noticed).

I have no experience with your Sigma but very familiar with the Sigma 60mm f2.8 that also rattles. My lens is also very sharp.
I wanted to buy the Zuiko 25mm f1.8 but I could not justify the price and went for the Panasonic 25mm f1.7. I have not regretted my choice. The Panasonic is sharp and a pleasure to use it.

If you have the Zuiko I see no reasons to keep the Sigma.

I have this & the Sigma 60mm f2.8 in SONY FE mount. They all rattle when the camera is not turned on, they are sharp, light weight and low cost, what else could I want. I am very happy with these Sigma lenses.

~ Just my personal opinion here..... I have the 19mm and 60mm ART versions and the 30mm in question here. The rattle is a known fact of the way they are built with a floating element. Also, the sharpness, contrast, and color rendition are something that keep one or more of these lenses a constant on my M43 Oly and Lumix bodies. A look around the Net will show how controversial these lenses are, and why they generally go for less $$.
...Now, I happen to also like longer lenses as my normal - as in a 50mm (a Nikkor S 1.4 at this moment) on my APSc Nikon bodies is normal for me. My 12-24mm zoom rarely sees action.

I have a Sigma DP2 Merrill with a fixed 30mm on it and I don't think there is much more sharper lens anywhere... Sigma can DO IT !

The Merrill should really show off that lens at its best. Beats me why the IF rattles, cuz Ive got several IF Sigmas that do not rattle, and none are from the premium line up. Does the lens in question rattle even during ordinary casual handling or do you really hafta "shake it to see if anything rattles" like some sort of homebrewed mechanical quality assessment ? Does it truly rattle, or is it only just a gentle soft "clunk thump" sound ?

Ken Rockwell likes to shake test lenses and almost always reports only a slight clicking from the iris blades.

Naw, No rattles here... But the quality of this one tempts me into giving one of their ART series a spin.
