I didn't know where to post this, but if this is wrong I know I'll hear about it.
I want to be able to record videos like those you would find on YouTube, but for my own use, not to post online. I want to be able to record my screen, as well as my voice as I describe procedures. I have been searching and Googling and coming up empty, maybe because I don't really know what I want. One "recommended" software for beginners was a $ 42-a-month subscription. I don't mind paying for software but this is something I might use a half-dozen times a year, so I'm not going to pay monthly for something I so rarely use.
This doesn't have to be brilliant professional video; I don't even know how to edit video. Just something basic I can send to my brother in an email. Basic stuff.
There are so many ways to do that, I'm not sure where to start.
Are you on a current Windows computer? Do you have Microsoft 365 for Word, etc? If so, try ClipChamp that is now part of Windows.
https://clipchamp.com/en/blog/how-to-screen-record-audio/If that doesn't work, say so. Because so many poorly paid public school teachers need this, there are plenty of other choices.

Ok, I have Clipchamp. I'll have to learn how to use it before I can say it works, but thanks for that suggestion. It doesn't have to be fancy...

I just opened it and made a little Photoshop screen-sharing thing for about a minute. It looks super easy and the screen and camera recording and audio work great. I'll play with this until I'm comfortable, but I think this will work just fine for what I need. Thanks so much.

Get yourself a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 to record, the stabilization and color are perfect for vlogging. Then get a license for ACD Video Studio or ACD Luxea Pro Video Studio for editing. Oh, and file as a business so this all is deductable.

The OP is wanting to do screen recording. You're right, the Pocket 3 is a marvelous camera. I've had the Pocket 2 for a couple years and even it is good.
I've been doing video editing for years and thought I'd heard of all the software for it. ACD is a new one for me. It seems the last year has turned video editing upside down. The free Windows ClipChamp, the free Mac iMovie and the free (very advanced) DaVinci Resolve has put everything with a price in an odd spot.

Microsoft (free) ClipChamp offers that feature under "Record & Create" option on the left side of the display.
"CapCut" is also another possibility. I use Wondershare's 'Filmora' to create mine. Not free but fantastic video editing software.
God Bless,
Papa Joe

Thank you. I'll make a note of that. The Clipchamp seems to work well for what I need.

Look into Camtasia and/or SnagIt.

I use a Movavi screen recorder program, and it works very well. You can use Movavi to edit as well. DaVinci REsolve has a free version with an excellent reputation as a video editor. OBS is a good free one, although I've never used it. There are many screen recorders that are free.

Thanks Jerry. I'm building up quite a reference library.
