R.I.P. Yes, the regionality of the sport is destroyed and the only thing to cheer for now is an individual team like choosing a team from the National Football Conference or the American Football Conference.

Big money ruins everything. The portal and NIL are a result of too much money in sports. I could go on but what's the use?

My Dad started taking me to Michigan games when I was five. Going undefeated in the Big Ten was very difficult, especially once scholarship reductions took place. I remember when Michigan finally did it and then got beaten by Stanford in the Rose Bowl on a last second field goal. Now Michigan has had two perfect regular seasons in a row. With the portal, the better players are moving to the better teams, so you have the same situation as before the scholarship reduction. Perhaps two strong teams in the entire league. So what's the answer? Plunder other leagues of their best teams? It seems to me that the logistics of travel for all the athletic teams in the conference is going to be a nightmare, especially when these students have classes and studies.

Just a note. Before scholarships were reduced from 100, Ohio State and Michigan were like minor league NFL teams both on offense and defense. The Ten Year War between Bo and Woody, with those 100 scholarships, was audacious.

I can remember when college was for learning a viable skill and Saturday football games were just for a little relaxation.

There are still those colleges which have these types of programs.

A few years back, a small college in southern Indiana had their "big game" coming up. As sometimes happens, that Saturday the Indiana State Police were giving their hiring exam. The QB wanted to be a state trooper after graduation. He asked his coach what he should do. Without hesitation, the coach had him take the trooper exam. The coach's reasoning was that the "big game" was just one game. Becoming a state trooper was a life choice.

I can also remember when college football was a team sport with team loyalty important among the athletes. It would have been unconscionable for a player to not participate in a game for fear of injury that might jeopardize future opportunities. Case in point: FSU players opting out after they didn’t receive CFP bid.

It is sad to see the regional rivalries disappear but new ones will develop and regardless of conference or opponent MY team is still MY team👍

IMHO you can no longer call them students. They are semipro and should be known as such.

Also, as they really are no longer "true students" the teams should now have to pay for:
1. Football stadiums including property taxes on the assessed valuation of said stadiums.
2. Taxes on all income to the team.
3. Removal of the right to use any Universities name in their name.
4. "College Football" has become a farce.

This year is a good example of what is going to (or has) happened to college sports. No loyalty to school, team, history or teammates. The transfer portal should be limited to a onetime event and athlete should have to pay back what the school has spent on him if he leaves.
I believe that there should also be a limit to how much an NIL athlete can be paid. After a certain amount, the balance is split among his teammates. Finally, a mechanism to share some of this money with smaller schools needs to be developed.
Money has been paid to college athletes illegally for years. Wait a few years when this gets to high school sports.

My Dad was a football coach for most of his teaching career. He coached a number of players who could have gone to schools like Michigan but didn't have the grades. One time there was a kid who had both talent and grades and, when he was a sophomore, Dad told Bump Elliott about him. Bump recruited him to Michigan and after Bump left, the player ended up playing for Bo. After graduation he joined another player in business and they did very well. There are schools that will take just about anybody, but not every school. Not your better institutions.

I went to the same high school that Dad taught at, and played football. One of the best athletes on the team, and perhaps the best all-round athlete the school ever had, was fast. In track he took two seconds and two sixths in state, big school category, which placed our school fifth on his points alone. A C student, he ended up at UTEP but didn't last. He ended up doing three tours of Vietnam and secretly Cambodia which whacked him out. Too bad, with better grades he could have gone to Michigan.
