Yes, I am a real thing. It's a Squirrelly thing.
So when I first moved here and heard of White Squirrels I thought it to be local legend but no, it is true they do exist and can be found in about a half of dozen pockets throughout the country. Brevard NC being one of those where they are quite common. These images were taken in my yard some 20 miles west of Brevard where these beauties are a bit less common but still can be found. The little bit of reading that I did suggested that they would be more common throughout the country but their white fur makes them easy prey for predators. Apparently in the areas where they are found their natural predators are a bit more scarce than in most areas of the country.

I love the white squirrels!! A friend of mine used to live in a gated community on the edge of Brevard and I saw quite a few white squirrels when I would visit.
Thanks for sharing!!

Beautiful subjects nicely shot
There are also local populations of black squirrels. They are beautiful! I have photos but couldn't find any with a short search. I think the photos are from someplace in the vicinity of Niagra Falls.
They are around Council Bluffs and Missouri Valley Ia, or, at least, they were.
Great set of images. I have never seen a white squirrel before, only photos like yours.
Olney, Illinois in southeast central Illinois. You really do not want to hit one with your car, it might be a felony. The city park has lots of white squirrels. If you have a real desire to see them, Olney is a little south of I-70 in eastern Illinois. Just watch where you're going, seriously.

Wake up dummy. You meant to say that black squirrels are around Council Bluffs and Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Nice pictures.
They're so cute! I've never seen or heard of them before. Apparently, they (like the black squirrels) are thought to be a color variant of (and in the same family as) the eastern gray squirrel. We have gray and black squirrels here. We also see smaller red squirrels (different family and very cute).
