Smoking bees like a cigarette. Ha! A smoker is basically a metal can with a hinged lid with bellows attached to the side. Put a smoldering oily rag in the can, squeeze the bellows and it emits smoke. Smoke tends to disorient honeybees, lessening (but not eliminating) the chance of being stung when you open up the hive.
