Formatting cards in camera, D850 with san disk CF express and SD extreme pro

I'm having difficulty formatting cards in my D850 camera. The primary slot is loaded with a CF express card and the secondary is an SD card. When I select format from the menu and select yes, nothing happens and the images remain on the card. The red yes light remains on until the the camera's "wake" times out. Checked the book but may have missed something. The camera came back from Nikon service a few weeks ago. Appreciate guidance. Thank you.

Try having only 1 card in the camera at a time might help.

Good Luck

This worked for the SD card, but not the CF Express Card. I can't find anything on the CF Express card that looks like a write protect tab.

Check your camera's firmware, because Nikon had issued firmware for the D850 to support CFexpress cards:

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.11 to 1.20
• Added supported for CFexpress cards (Type B). For more information, see the Nikon support website for your country or region.

I have two questions...why was your camera at Nikon for service, and what size is your CFE card? A bonus question would be whether the firmware got updated while the camera was at Nikon.

You may have already done this, if so please disregard. Make sure that when you go to format memory card that you select XQD slot, yes and then when you go to OK make sure that you hold OK down for about a second before letting go. If that does not work then you probably have a problem with your camera.

It shouldn't matter whether or not you have one or both cards in the camera since it asks you which card you want to format. It also shouldn't matter if your camera firmware is up to date or not as it will not use CF Express cards unless it has already been updated to new enough that it shouldn't matter.

The work around if none of that works is to go to the playback menu at the top of the menu go to delete, select all and then delete the photos. Not as good as formatting the memory card, but will at least give you an empty memory card to work with.

Hope you can get it figured out and get your camera working properly.

Thank you to all of you (all y' all). Turned out it was the manipulation of the OK button (duh!) and I'm good now.
Wishing all of you the very best in the New Year.
Thanks for all the times you all have helped me in 2023 ... and have been patient for the times when I was technically a little behind the curve.

I always appreciate those times when there is a straightforward solution.
