Canon rf 100-400 lens with Canon rf 2x extender

Does any have experience with this combination.
I currently have the rf 100-400 lens. I'm wondering how well it will work with the 2X extender. I know you loose two
stops of light with the 2x extender.

Thanks,
Dan

I use the 1.4 and 2.0 with the RF 100-400. The 1.4 combo is fantastic and the 2.0 is very good in bright light. I use the later with the R7 to photograph eagles. For general BIF use I prefer the 1.4.

Everyone is saying the mirrorless EOS cameras retain autofocus with these RF extenders and the RF lenses, just with the differences in light throughput, i.e., the smaller effective aperture. I don't have hands-on experience, but have seen plenty of examples supporting the many observations.

My experience was with a 5D iv. I took photos using the 100-400 at 400, both with and without the extender.
Results: simply cropping the photo taken without the extender to give the same field of view as with the extender gave me sharper photos than using the extender.

Forget autofocus! Nothing above f/8.0 is going to work with A/F so you are limiting your subject material. Live view might help with focus, try it and see what you get. If patience is your strong point you will not experience problems. Good luck, and post your results so we can see.

You clearly have no experience with Canon mirrorless technology, or you'd know the f/8 limitation went away with the DSLRinosaurs. Sad. Very Sad.

I shoot Nikon and with my D500 that was true, but since going mirrorless I’ve found the newer lenses to work very well with TC’s. I’ve used both the 1.4x and 2x with the 100-400 on my Z9 to great effect.

That was a limit of DSLR technology. It’s not a problem with mirrorless.

I use rf 100-400 with 1.4 on a canon rp and it works great the only limitation is low light it auto focuses until low light. I love it.

I have the combination, my camera (R) states they don't work together, just hit OK, and works fine.

Thanks for your reply. I currently have the Sigma 150-600 that I use with a 1.4 extender and an ef/r adapter on my EOS R. It works great but also has low light limitations. I'm interested in the Canon 100-400rf lens and the 2x extender because it is lighter and thus easier to carry around.
