Hope is a survivor! She has returned for the last 8 winters to feed on the resident goose and duck population here at Canyon Lake. We call her “Hope” because last winter we photographed her dining on goose carcasses that died of avian flu and we hoped she would survive that pandemic. If you take a close look at her (we say “her” because she dwarfs her male companion by about a third in stature) you may notice her beak is malformed. Some theorize she suffered a gunshot wound that removed a portion of her upper beak. No one really knows but her distinctive beak means, along with her size, she is easily recognized even in flight. These photos were shot on 22 Dec…please enjoy…
