My wonderful wife gifted me with one of those "smart watches" for XMAS.
I have spent more than a few hours working on it, put the app on my "smart phone", connected the watch to the phone, turning on certain features at the watch, learning that some features can only be set using the phone. This thing is confusing as all get out to me, I have eight "dumb watches" that I rotate wearing as it is. When and if I ever get this watch figured out, it may well be on my wrist the majority of the time, just to prove to family and friends that I mastered the evil thing. Hope everyone else also had a Merry Christmas!

I am a grown adult (going by the number of years I have been around) and I usually have a cell phone in my pocket. My wife (also a grown adult by the same criterion) does not, for the simple reason that women's fashions don't include pockets, something that makes me immensely happy that I am male. (I am immensely happy that she is female for completely different reasons).

I started carrying a cell phone around in the '90s. I quit wearing a watch in the '60s. For 20 years before that I wore a wristwatch. They lasted maybe a year or less on average before I managed to smash them on something. When I quit wearing a wristwatch I tried a pocket watch for a while but with basically the same result. So I quit the pocket watch and got a pocket calculator that had a watch in it. That went in a different pocket (shirt) and was either more durable or less likely to be smashed in that location. The cell phone finally took over.

I can understand that, I just prefer to look at my wrist vs taking out my phone, just to see what time it is.

I have a pace maker and as I was leaving the hospital a technician (from the doctor's office who put the pace maker in), came into my hospital room and spent close to an hour programing an Apple Smart Phone, and then he explained the importance of keeping it with in 25 miles of me, and keeping it charged (plugged into an outlet). And then he left me with an instruction book.

I went to my cardiologist office several weeks later, I asked him why I hade an expensive Apple Smart Phone that 'talks' to my pace maker, (what sort of stories do they tell each other?), my question was basically did anyone expect me to 'learn' this silly toy and why was that important to me? Basically, it monitored my pace maker and that prompted me to ask why? The final result was that it would tell his office if I was alive and if there was a reason for him to get involved with me and my heart.

So now, I do two things, I leave the Apple Smart Phone plugged in on a shelf and I threw the unreadable instruction manual into the trash the day I got home from the office visit. I decided that I really have no business try to play at acting like I'm a doctor of Cardiology.

Perhaps you might just go back to wearing a watch. You could of course just do what I do, know that the cats that live outside, need to be fed at first light, and know a while after the sun goes down that I will need to go to bed soon (I never worry about it getting to late, the house cat comes and tells me when SHE has decided it's time for bed. She is a vary smart cat, funny, I've never seen her look at a watch or a cell phone...).

When I got my pacemaker my cardiologist supplied me with a box that goes under my bed. It connects to my pacemaker and monitors the situation. I was told that if I go away for a couple weeks, no problem. The pacemaker keeps records for a couple weeks and will catch up when I return. I then moved 150 miles away. I took the box with me and the cardiologist still receives the reports. When I finally got a new cardiologist he just transferred the data to his records and with a card describing the box, he now receives the reports from the box instead of having them go through my previous cardiologist. I never had a watch, Apple or other, to do that job.

And with the current problems with Apple watches, the dedicated box approach is probably significantly more reliable.

PS: the card that went with the box describes the pacemaker too and was helpful when I needed an MRI recently since the MRI has to be adjusted to compensate for the pacemaker.

Interesting about the MRI. I have a defribulator/pacemaker combo implanted in my chest due to v-fib. Was told I could not undergo an MRI cause it would mess up the combo. My Physiologist-Cardiologist says it can be done but most doctors are afraid to try an MRI. So far, I have been able to avoid the need for an MRI, but wonder what will happen if I sometime need one.

I want you to know that I went to work this morning a forget my smart phone at home. And you know what, I didn’t hyperventilate, curl up in the fetal position, wring my hands, cry or anything. My ex always did tell me that I wasn’t able to express my emotions. I’ll admit that I did die a little bit on the inside, but I lived through that emotional trauma. And I’m telling you this as therapy. I hope I’m able to get out of bed in the morning and I’ll make sure I don’t forget it again.

My wife was gifted an Apple watch back in the summer. It was set up and worked perfectly. Then she decided she needed an updated phone. We took the phone and watch to the Apple store because the phone and watch were not in sync. They synced them up but messed up the settings so now my wife is going through the same morass as you are! Life doesn't get simpler as we age, it gets a lot harder! I wish you well in getting that Bronco tamed! Happy New Year!
