Eagles in the NW

Several weeks ago I asked the group where around Seattle there might be eagles this time of the year. I was asked to show what I found. Slim pickings in Dec but we did see a pair and a single. Problem was distance, closest we could get was about 200 yards. Z8, 100-400mm, 2x extender and DX mode. Generally 1/1500, f8-11, auto ISO and used the hood of the car for a tripod. I was driving along the south side of the Hood Canal last week and saw an eagle just sort of hanging out in a tree along the road. I also saw a flock of about 15-20 great blue herons that were flying along and setting down in a bunch of roosts by the road as well.

of course I didn't have a camera with me at the time

Wildlife photography is always a chance of not finding your bird or animal. I am glad that you found a few eagles and herons on this trip.

Plan to come back to the NW in May/June and head to Seabeck on Hoods Canal (about 90 west of Seattle via Tacoma/bremeerton. ) There will be plenty of eagles then.

Right now in Skagit Valley, particularly around Bow and Edison, we've been spotting many eagles, along with Heron, Snow Geese and owls.

Skagit River Valley, about 2 hrs NE of Seattle is where hundreds gather; there is a Skagit River Cruises boat company that has a boat built for photographers, and they run photo "cruses" great opportunities !
