Your thoughts on the Nikon Z 28-75 f2.8

I do realize that this is not an S lens but would like your thoughts on it. It is on sale for $899.95 on the Nikon site. regularly $1199.95 for a savings of $300. I have the Tamron 24-70 F2.8 and can use it on my Z6ii with an adapter. There is a lot of difference in weight between using the Tamron with the adapter an just using the Nikon Z lens. Yes I do realize I am loosing 4mm on the wide end but it would be much lighter. I and researching trying to see what the quality difference would be between the two. I will always have the Tamron if I need the extra width. I have been doing research on this so I don't need to be called lazy for asking here for your input. If you have any HELPFUL information to add please reply. Thanks, Grandpaw

I suggest you read Thom Hogan’s review on his Sans Mirror site. I think he said it was a good option if it can be found on sale. I think his reviews are fair. I own one and have been satisfied with the results it has given me. I am just a hobbyist who is still learning.

When Ken Rockwell gives an introduction to his review of this lens, like below, what else needs to be done, except read the full review?

The Z 28-75mm f/2.8 is a brilliant lens. It's fast, covers a great zoom range, focusses quickly, it's sharp, has little to no distortion, flare or ghosts as shot, has great bokeh and very good sunstars, focuses super-close, is very light weight and reasonably priced. It's a winner!

The lens doesn't have VR built in, which is part of the price savings. Either higher shutter speeds or a tripod will be necessary to avoid blurred photos. For the record I use the 70-180 which also doesn't have VR built in. My Z7 body does however. When I extend to the full 180 I will either get the shutter speed up or will go to my tripod to avoid the blurry photos.

Just as a general suggestion...it is pretty easy to set your Tamron at an estimated 28mm and zomming to 24mm while looking through the viewfinder at a frame that kind of looks like what you normally photograph. You can do the same thing, starting at 65 mm and zooming to 70. What you see happen will be much more helpful than trying to compare based just on the numbers.

Given the Nikon Z6II includes 5-axis in-camera sensor-shift In-Body Image Stabilization (aka IBIS), it would seem the lack of VR from the lens is a non-issue, maybe even a positive benefit in the pricing. That Z6II IBIS is rated to rated 5 stops with any Nikon Z mount lenses.

Got one. I tend to carry the 24-70/4.0 more often cuz its much smaller. But if I need 2.8 then I appreciate how the 28-75 is very light for its specs. I do believe that not including 24mm kept the bulk down, but I still wish it could have been shorter.

In the real world, 28mm is plenty wide enuf. When I was a bit less venerable, 28mm was borderline ultrawide. Acoarst, on UHH those 4mm are earth shattering. FWIW, the 28-75 makes a fine partner to the 14-30. With that in your bag you can feel more at ease about the 28mm limit on your main lens.

You seem tempted by a bargain. Well, I had my 24-70 when I was tempted by a deal on the 2.8. No regrets even though its NOT my first call as a midrange lens.

Also, i suspect, reduction in overall bulk.
Since the approptiate cameras have IBIS, absence of VR is no hey problemo !

Cant complain about having one less component at risk of failure.

I purchased that lens a month ago and I love it! The 28-75 is sharp and lighter than my 24-70 S which is a little heavy and full of features that are not that useable for me. I would highly recommend the 28-75.

That is one of the very first things I did to see how much difference the extra mm's made. My main concern was what the difference was, if any, the lens would make in the quality of pictures compared to the Tamron. I was considering this lens due to being lighter. As I get older the weight is beginning to become more important.I have all the focal lengths covered for my DSLR's such as the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 Tamron 24-70 F2.8. and the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 but these lenses are heavy and then I have to add the adapter to make them work. I must say that these lenses with the adapter work great but are heavy to carry around. I was just looking for something for my mirrorless that was a little lighter. I do have the 24-70 F4 Z mount. I just can't decide if spending the money for one more stop of light is worth it. Just thought I would get some input from fellow members.

If you do not need the extra 4 mm on the wide end, I would consider this lens a great buy at the sale price. The lack of a built in VR motor does not concern me at all. I am thinking of buying its sister lens, the 70-180mm f2.8 because of its much lower price and weight over the 70-200mm f2.8 version made by Nikon.
