Iv'e never been a fan of Sigma because their lenses were so big and heavy. Last week I purchased a 17mm f/4 Contemporary Lens for my Sony A7R111. Sigma has created an excellent wide angle lens for landscape photography.
It's compact, lightweight, and delivers exceptional performance.

I use four compact lenses of that same series including that wonderful 17mm. For me 17 is nothing whatsoever connected to landscapes. Ive never liked the look of stuff at a distance as rendered by a wide lens.

Since 35mm is FF normal to me and 17 is 1/2 of 35, to me its a midwide, same as 24 would be a midwide for someone who considers a 50 to be their FF normal lens.

Really good to see that the 17/4.0 has such a wide span of users. Not low $$, but worth it !

For landscapes my go to lens is the Sony 24-105 f4. If I need something wider, I really like the new Sony FE 4/PZ 16-35mm G lens. This lens has a motorized zoom ring designed for video, but I find it works great for stills also.

I thought we were discussing the little Sigma 17mm. FWIW, youre definitely not upgrading my opinion of distance shown by a wide lens. Maybe someday Ill aim my trusty little 17mm at something distant, or ... maybe not. Below shows my attempt to catch a bit of distance within the 17mm view.

Actually, nothing in the frame is further away than across the street, which is why its a job for a 17mm, and why this compact Sigma is hardly my first one :-)
