I asked about this the other Day and just said collar . I am asking about the collar that goes around the Nikon 80 to 400 lens that mounts to the tripod.i want to know if this is efficient or are there better ones out there. Sorry about the misunderstanding

when I owned that lens I purchased a collar from Kirk. The Nikon-provided collar was a Nikon embarrassment and did not work well for the size or weight of the lens.

Check with B&H photo they carry all different camera items or check out eBay.
...I bought a 200-500 f5.6 a few years back and, ugh, the collar was terrible and I replaced it with the Kirk offering...not bad at all (and I flip between portrait and landscape alot, so it had to be good). In the meantime I transitioned to mirrorless so had to (I know...I don't *really*) get Z mount glass. As soon as it came out I got the 100-400 "S" lens...smooth as silk. Same with the 70-200 f2/8. Of course, we who "bird" waited for the 180-600 and I got one as soon as NPS could wangle it. Nice price, great glass and again, not being an "S" lens, not-so-great collar. Sigh. I can *almost*make it work (which puts it ahead of the 200-500 experience) but yesterday I checked with Kirk and, indeed, they have one...haha, although it's sold out until February! I'll betcha, tho', that Kirk makes one for your lens and they design well.
I do not have the exact model Nikon lens, however, in the past I've had a 300mm, 400, mm, 500mm & 600mm. All of the standard Nikon feet have been replaced with the Kirk Enterprise feet. I know there are other 3rd party companies that make replacement feet, but in looking at the quality that Kirk uses, their communications with customers, I plan on staying with them in the future

I mostly reverse my tripod collars so they are up, so I use them as a carrying handle. Most of my shooting is hand held for sports and wildlife. I find tripods and monopods restrictive when photographing birds in erratic flight patterns.
PS. most tripod collars from many manufactures do not come with a Arca-Swiss mount. This is true for most telephoto lenses. So I guess one could say if the tripod collar was not Arca-Swiss they then, according to your standard, are an embarrassment.
PSS. I find the newer tripod collars offered by Nikon well engineered. Most photographers just go out and buy a Arca-Swiss mount without complaint. But, to each his own.

I second the Kirk option. They are not cheap but their products are solid and very well made. I recently bought feet for the Z800mm PF and the Z180-600. Both are exceptional and have the arca grooves built in. They are easier to grasp and made of high quality billet.
Last year I bought a 80-400G from Used Photo Pro, and it came with the "stock" collar, which I really didn't like. However, they happened to have a RRS collar, which is superb. I suspect the used lens came to Used Photo Pro and they put the original back on it. It was a decent buy, and I love it. Far superior to the standard collar.
I've also bought a couple of Kirks, and there's very little difference in the quality of RRS or Kirk.
Just my $.02 worth.

I use a RRS collar on my Nikon 200-500
