It has been maybe 3 or 4 years since I had an opportunity for a Kingfisher.
This guy flew in front of me and perched as I was pulling up to the lake - so I slowly moved the car so I could shoot out the window. After getting several shots, I decided to get out and try to get closer. After I got out and looked up - he was GONE
Canon 80D and Canon 400 f4 DO, 1.4X III, 1/350, f5.6, ISO 400 in overcast light, hand held/braced, BIG 80% cropping..... so, this is far from perfect but, will I keep it - You bet ! But, not good enough to sell larger prints on my Fine Art America site tho .....

Beautiful. I know how tough they are to photograph.

I see absolutely no problem with the IQ of this shot using download. Perfect?? I don't know, that probably means different things to different people. But it's very good. You should be happy and proud to have it! Great job, Larry!!
Good catch of a tough quarry, Larry!
Great shot Larry. I'm so jealous, I am still waiting for a decent photo of them

Great Kingfisher!
I have been teased and tortured by them for years and never gotten close enough for that fine detail.
Wouldn't be so bad if they didn't cackle and mock as they keep away just far enough.
Therapy is helping haha..
And yes, clone the stick.
Great image. I like the way his beak echos the two other perchs in the image.
Nice!!! The closest I have been able to get is about 150'-200'
I love your portrait of the Kingfisher. Well done. What is the hair sticking out from its chest? It just has me curious.
I think many of us have had the same thing happen when taking photos. You take a couple and then try to get closer as exiting the vehicle and it is no longer there. At least you have what you have which is better than any Kingfisher photo I have attempted. I have the same luck with Red Winged Blackbirds. Friends will take close up photos all day long but I can't find one that is willing to give me 5 seconds of its time. Oh well.
