Really? For $425? How about a sledge hammer for a fraction of the cost? If a business wants to destroy dozen of HDDs, they would use a crusher that's hydraulically powered.

I run cipher on them before recycling them, no need to crush/destroy/mutilate.

But isn't crushing more fun?

I take it apart and use the motor to spin the disk. It's fun.

A couple of .45 rounds does a great job.

Then what do you do with the drive?

I run cipher on them and then recycle.

I'm with the sledgehammer idea. Drive a big nail through it after.

The only way to truly destroy data on an HDD is to dip the drive into an acid bath. This is the only method approved by the government for destroying a HDD that has stored classified data.

Or degaussing - subjecting to a VERY strong magnetic field which destroys the data and the internals of the drive. Onboard ship, the Navy used to saw them in quarters with a metal bandsaw and toss the pieces overboard. We used to have to charge numerous federal agencies a premium “no return” price on drives which was passed on to the manufacturer, and allowed warranty coverage on a failed drive without returning it.

I knew a couple guys who would attend DefCon every year. They explained to me that an area on disk, is not like a checkbox, but an area, and that it would be possible to read the last several writes to that area. Consequently, the best way to clear a disk is to overwrite everything at least ten times with random data. Then crush it.

Writing over with random data, like cipher does, should be sufficient.
I set cipher to write all 0s, then all 1s, then random data.
That way you or someone else can use the drive or recycle it without fear.
After you crush it, does it go in the trash can to the landfill?
