Two Memory Cards!

I wish all cameras had slots for two memory cards. I took some local pictures yesterday and today. I put the card into the computer and clicked on DCIM. Zero! Nada! Nothing! This was a Lexus 64GB card I had used before. I was able to transfer other files to it. I'm wondering if maybe it wasn't inserted all the way. I've been shooting digital since about 2004, and this is the first time I've had a blank card.

Fortunately, my D750 has two card slots, so I didn't have to re-shoot. I'll try that card later, thinking it might not have been inserted fully, yet the little door did close.

Pictures to follow.

Even 4 or 5 cards wont prevent user errors, but I spoze maybe it could spread out such errors more thinly over a wider terrain.

I was being facetious...
My cameras only have one slot.

A 256 GB SD card at B & H is $36; time to upgrade even if the old one works. They are too small.

Too much hassle to change cards? Too small is an inconvenience?
Besides, I can't "upgrade" as my one camera can't work with (use all of) anything over 16GB.

I know, I should upgrade the camera also, right?
(Not.)

I've only had one camera that had two card slots, my Canon 7D Mark II. My current camera of choice is the Nikon Z fc which only has one slot. While I always carry an identical spare SD card in my bag, It won't help me recover images if the card in the camera has a catastrophic failure.

However, in the 15 years I've been shooting digital, with several hundred thousand images captured on fewer than two dozen SD cards, I have never had a failure up to this point. While an SD card failure is always a possibility, the chances of it occurring appear to be so low that It is not something I ever worry about. At my age the chances are my current SD cards will outlive me.

My film camera only had one roll of film and I never missed a shot in over 45 years of professional photography. On digital I have only used one slot and after well over 500,000 images I have never had an issue. Of course, I am a professional with over 60 years of photographic experience, so for me I always test everything before going out on assignment.

I have had one sd card failure in eighteen years and none of my cameras have two slots. I dont do any paid work and don’t need to be concerned about this. BOTOH If I were doing weddings I would have at least two cameras, both with two slots to CMA. Had a friend during the film days whose photographer lost all of the wedding pictures when his one camera malfunctioned. Bridezilla was not happy at all.

To save on size they could even have one of those small sod cards (forgot what they are called) for 99% of the people that would be enough. If you are shooting the olympics you would want faster cards but frame rates are getting insane 2 seconds pre shoot then 120 frames/sec. At the end of the day you will have thousands of photos to look through and after a while you will be going through the motion without really looking at the photos, reminds me of HDR days were I took 3shot brackets of everything, it was just a waste of disk space

Just out of curiosity, are you burning RAW files to one card, and JPEG's to the second card?

Jerry, What you should do is set your camera so that the shutter doesn't fire if there is no memory card is in the slot. This is a setting you can find in Menus. You can set the camera not to shoot unless there is a card in the camera...

On my Sony a99ii I use two cards. Top slot is for photos and the bottom I use only for videos. It works great not a problem at all.

What type of card Jerry? If an SD, could the write protect be on? Are all the menu settings correct to write to both cards rather than when the first one fills?
