This issue has to do with all previous versions of Lightroom including the current version on Windows 10 running on a Dell Laptop I7 8 GB ram 2 TB SSD (I know the laptop is underpowered but I can't afford a newer one yet) . I have 15 images shot on a tripod with 1/3 to 1/2 overlap. The preview works just fine but I get a merge error in the main processing. This doesn't happen all of the time but about 2% of the time. Sometimes I can fix the problem by first making a pano out of images 1 thru 9 and then a second pano of images 7 thru 15 then merging the 2 panos into a single image. Sometimes that doesn't work either but it always works in the preview. I guess the question would be why it works great in the preview and then fails in the main processing? Has anyone else encountered this issue and if so is there a reason it happens?
Preview is less demanding. You already know your pc is "underpowered"

The i7 should still be good, and the SSD.
But 8gb ram is inadequate. You need at least 16gb for Adobe products; 24 would be better.
What are those upgrade options for your model?
Sometimes they just dont work. Worse results if relatively dark or lacking strong edges for lines. If fail in lightroom, try photoshop and vice versa. In my experience 2% would be a very low failure rate.

Underpower is likely. This usually means memory. I would use the Win task manger to see what else is running on your machine that is chewing up memory and stop them. Many apps when installed like to leave a piece of it running at boot time so when you decide to actually use the app, it cranks up quickly. Too many of those simply tie up memory. I'd reboot and see what comes up. I think the task manager tells you the memory in use. This is stopgap not a solution.
The best the Dell can do is 16 GB RAM I'll try that. The laptop is dedicated to Lightroom so nothing else is running in the background. Photoshop has the same issue with some panos.

Be sure your Dell laptop is as free as possible of stored data and also not running apps in the background including internet. Second, be sure you use an external hard drive to draw data from, and to store to. At a minimum utilize an external hard drive.
processing pano images pushes the boundaries for budget laptops. Best case would be an external SSD for storage with internal SSD in your laptop running Lightroom exclusively.

I agree with others that suggest upgrading your onboard memory. I have an old Dell Studio 1555 that is a dinosaur with 4gb of ram. Just booting it up requires patience. And for not a lot of money, you could also install a SSD for easily less than a $100. Or accept your fate and put the money into a future purchase.
If you can inexpensively upgrade from 8 to 16 GB Ram you will take some pressure off larger images.
If buying a new machine is not too far away, I might wait and save the money.
Still Photography does not require a maxed out machine, but you want updated graphics and 32gb Ram to give you headroom for the future.
Manufacturers often under spec machines to compete on price , because most of their users surf the web, do email & Facebook, and there is nothing wrong with that, but those machines do not work very well for stitching images.

8GB of RAM is not much memory and it depends on the size of the images going into the panorama.

I just got a sales flyer from Costco. They have a very attractively priced desktop computer. I don't remember all the details other than: $899. 32GB ram, 8 GB graphics card, and 2TB SSD. Sounds pretty good to me.
I have been using panoramas for wide angle shots for a number of years since I learned the technique from this forum a few years ago from posts by Gene (I forget his handle) who always gave great advice. He moved from NYC to Delaware and then disappeared. I fear the worst but never heard for sure and miss him. I digress but for years I used a i7 with 16G RAM which would be way underpowered by today’s standards. I also used LrC because Ps was exorbitantly priced before the subscription plan. But I assume, with no evidence, that the Pano merge is identical and I never saw the behavior you are seeing. Joining the others who responded, I guess memory size is the issue.

My best guess is the computer is running out of memory. Try opening the computers activity monitor program (It might have a different name on a PC but it is there) and run the merging program and monitor what is happening.
