My old D5300 “returned” home. Can this model allow for back button focus?
I’ve been scanning instructions and the menu system without success.

Try this:
https://backcountrygallery.com/?s=back-button+focus(Scroll down to "Free Back Button AF Guide for Nikon")
Menu item f2 set AE-L/AF-L button to AF-On
Item a1 set AF-C Priority to release.
Back button focus is not described in any camera manual for any model nor any brand. Instead, you need to find the section in the manual that describes reprogramming the assigned functions to specific external camera buttons. You assign AF ON to a rear button on the camera and update the shutter release to remove the focusing function.
Another thread either today or yesterday asked why are you on UHH? This is only one of several reasons, but if I'm stuck and the books and manuals are not helping, I very often find it here on UHH.
So today, to all who helped, THANK YOU! I'm back on track with BBF which I use with all my bodies.
