I seem to wake up about every two hours. I roll over, look at the clock, and groan. Then I try to go back to sleep. I've seen several articles that suggest the same thing: if you can't get back to sleep in twenty minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing. If you spend too much "awake time" in bed, your body will associate that with not-sleeping. Instead, read a book, avoid electronic screens, relax in a comfortable chair, or do something that is not stressful. When you feel tired, go back to bed.
There is a video about how to get to sleep in fifteen minutes, but I'm not going to watch it because it's not going to work.

I tried to watch a video about falling asleep but I never finished it. I fell asleep. Now I'm never gonna learn how to fall asleep.
One more curse of seniordom. I don't think I've had a good night's sleep since Clinton was in office. You read all these articles about how you're supposed to get at least 8 hours of sleep and I think I get that much but it's over two nights.

That's like the old Jack Benny joke where he complains to a friend about not sleeping. He says that the last few days he has not been getting enough sleep and tells the friend that on Monday he only slept about four hours and on Tuesday it was only about five. The friend replies "Only four or five hours a night? That's terrible." To which Jack replies "Oh, at night I get eight hours."
I've been taking Trazodone for 14 years. It helps, but I still have occasional sleepless nights. Mostly I sleep well.

Xanax is highly addictive.

My doctor also prescribed Trazadone to me as a sleep aid. However, is is classifies as an antidepressant rather than a sleep aid. It didn't work for me.

I wouldn’t describe it as highly addictive. Been using this low dose for >30 years just for sleep with no issues. If you mean it would difficult to sleep without it, maybe so, but who cares? At 78, I’m not going to stop, and it doesn’t concern my physician(s). In low doses, it’s also an excellent anti-anxiety drug with zero side effects in my experience. My MD said when prescribing it that half the pastors in Raleigh took one before their weekly sermon. I’m aware that in higher doses, benzodiazepines can be addictive, but so is sex, nice/fast cars, cameras and good beer

We’ll hell, if we’re talking effective home sleep aids I can attest to the efficacy of a small dose of Cannibis Indica (not, Sativa) best baked into a batch of your favorite brownies or cookies. Works wonders for my (senior) sister, cousins, friends and me as we will all affirm.

I’m seriously considering this.

That's what naps are for.
