Read this to learn interesting aspects of photography (++!) from the vast plethora of contributors. Post words to help out when I might have an insight someone has asked about, rarely post photos, but do if it is relevant to a topic, or something interesting I've done. It is usually the first thing I read in the morning.
As a side-note, we have such a treasure of history and knowledge amongst us. It seems no matter what major thing that happened in the 1900's, or what great photographer lived back then, or what technology developed, someone on this site has been there, met them, helped develop it. Love to hear those stories and learn from the primary resource how it really was.

Several years ago, my wife and I belonged to a camera club. The skill levels ranged from novice to old pro's. We had a monthly theme competiton for color prints, black and white and Digital. The prints were matted and hung on a viewing rack, judging was done by outside professional photographers. There were 1st,2nd,3rd and Honorable mentions awarded at the end of the club meeting. Points were awarded and at the end of the year, awards were handed out for most points in categories. Since moving years ago, we no longer belong to any clubs. I like getting the UHH in my email each day and I read through it like a morning newspaper. My main interests are the Digital Artistry and Smartphone photography sections and primarily post my images there.

I post photographs for many reasons. First let me explain, I am a picture taker. I take spur of the moment shots in field situations that most people call snap shots. I am not, and never want to be, considered a photographer.

I post because my ego needs stroking. I post things that I find interesting that others may too. I post because occasionally I can bring someone joy or get a chuckle out of them.

I am also an image creator. I take several images, often from different sources, combine them to produce a picture. Please take note of my terminology, I take images and combine them into a picture, not a photograph.

I post in several Forums. Where I post depends on the subject. Photographs generally go in Photo Gallery or Birds where they get the most looks (remember ego). Occasionally a photograph will go to one of the Specialty Forums where I hope to get honest critiques, my ego be damned, in an attempt to improve my skills.

Composite pictures generally go to one of the Specialty Forms for meaningful critiques of my effort. If I create a composite that I think is really cool I may post it to Picture Gallery (remember ego). Occasionally I will construct a composite that has a "social message". Being careful not to cross the line and get moved to The Attic I will post it in the Photo Gallery

I post for most of the same reasons as you, and also for the reactions that my photos would get. Most of the time I will try to follow a theme for a number of days, such as color, or recently classic cars. It is almost winter here in New York currently, so going out for an afternoon of shooting will be extremely rare for this old man. So I will search my archives of 35k photos to look for an interesting theme that I have not used, or at least not used in a long time and post some of the photos following that theme. Going on this forum, looking at the postings, or posting my own stuff relieves some of the boredom, and creates a little joy.

Because I can, and I like to display my often feeble attempt at photography.

I like people, conversation and new experiences. As a youngster from what was then a hick town, the Army stationed me in New York City. A repetitive lack of funds made me take advantage of a weekly free meal though a USO gathering place for military personnel (incl. pool, ping pong, and girls for dancing). The biggest lesson was that as much as I got to experience with pleasure, I don't like crowds. Being in a crowd, the D_ _ K comes out in me (get your head out of the gutter... DORK) which transitions as a primary reason I never joined a camera club. I can post on UHH for the people, conversation and learning, avoid the crowd I don't like and no one has to know who I am behind the D _ _K (again...DESK). The best part is that it is almost always positivity-driven. Posting here is akin to The Voice on tv - you don't need to know anything about the person, just appreciate the post and choose your level of engagement pleasure.

A very interesting question. . . "Why do you post to UHH?"
My mind immediately went to the tech/equipment side of photography since I wanted to know the "how-to-do-it" side.
Then I see the "I post photographs for many reasons." follow-up.
Since my photography talent is more of a documentation of my travel experiences than art I rarely post unless it is to illustrate a process or effect.
Instead, I prefer solutions obtained from some very giving, experienced, and generous UHH members who daily mentor us, hopeful souls.
If I feel confident in my process/problem observation I add my limited knowledge obtained from the school of hard knocks & skinned-up parts, grin.
Best Wishes,
JimmyT Sends

PS: I will always be a student.

Oh, Linda, I so relate to that sentiment! But then, I'm an introvert.
I am 100% introvert!

As we know, some erroneously equate introvert with "shy" and I haven't been shy since high school

Well my wife and I moved to MDI about 10 years ago, from Alexandria, VA. We had vacationed here and felt right at home and welcome as soon as we arrived. But Acadia is really a special place, and perhaps because of that (and the big employers here -- Jackson Lab, MDI Biological Lab and College of the Atlantic) the island attracts a more interesting and diverse population than some locals elsewhere in the state.
Native-born Mainers, especially if their family roots go deep, tend to be reserved, and not particularly "chatty" with those from away. They (and I) prefer to not reveal much personal and they (and I) aren't particularly curious about other folks' histories until we've engaged several times.

We are not people who share "TMI" while standing in a grocery checkout line, like two acquaintances I know in Washington

Pretty much the same reasons Linda from Maine stated. I've learned so much from everyone here on UHH.

I post here because it is a great place to be, I enjoy the photography and discussions that we have. I think I have made a lot of friends here because our interests are the same, PHOTOGRAPHY.
