I am probably tooooo old to begin my photography journey but I am Robert Bennett, 54 year old retired and bored guy in Palm Coast Fl. I have traveled all over North America doing hunting with my dad. I was disabled in a car crash in 2010, so am now retired/disabled but still bored and have the itch to do SOMETHING. I can't hunt anymore, but still want to capture the majesty of wildlife. I have been watching training videos after videos on my camera and settings, read e-books I have subscribed to and just want to get out and get to clicking! I am sure my photos will not be worthy at first but eventually want to travel to the mid west/yellowstone area and photo some of the HUGE majestic animals!! Nice to meet you all and hope to learn more from your informative posts and critiques.

You are definitely not too old to start. It appears you already have a camera, let us know what camera and lenses you may have and some of the more experienced members here can surely give you guidance. For wildlife you will surely need a long lens, for some of the beautiful landscapes this country has to offer a wider lens would be in order. You're going to get a lot of conflicting advice so prepare to do more research, use what you already have until you have the experience to make wise choices in any equipment purchase. Be sure to check some of the reputable companies specializing in used equipment if you need any equipment upgrades and beware of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) it can put a big dent in your retirement funds. And most of all practice, practice, practice. You will get better. When you're ready to post your pictures here, at the bottom, before you hit the submit button click "Store Original" before sending. That will allow us to better enjoy your photos and it will also allow the more expert members here to offer you more specific help with your photo. I see you are a Marine, thank you for your service to this wonderful country

I really enjoyed hunting with my dad growing up, and definitely my time in the woods. I want to concentrate on wildlife animals, with some birds of prey and hummingbirds for my wife's enjoyment. I now know from my research I should have gone mirrorless for the "silent" shutter for wildlife pictures, but ooooops. I will not buy any more gear for my camera until I have the $ to go mirrorless, and that Sony A7III looks to be the way to go. I have a Canon D90 and 3 stock lenses, nothing fancy at all. Figured it was more than enough to learn the ropes of wildlife photography. My dream goal would be to get out to the West, and photograph the large animals of say Yellowstone/Wyoming/Montana areas. I will do some walk n shootin, however, after my car crash my left side of my body is a bit messed up, and cant hold the camera up for long or steady so plan to do the majority of my shooting from a blind with a tripod/Gimbal combo. As far as the GAS syndrome goes, have no worry, Im on limited fixed income after my car crash, and cant get big fancy gear like Im seeing the pros use on the youtube channels, unless "THEY" wanna buy it for me. Thanks again for your input

I don't think shutter noise will be a big disadvantage. Most of your wildlife shoots won't be that close. As for hummingbirds, if you're patient, put a chair near where they feed and sit and watch. Once they get used to you being there you will have no problem being within ten feet or less of them. This past summer I had Lantana and some other flowers by my back door, more than once I opened the door to go out and a hummer would look up from the flower it was feeding from, fly towards me and hover only 1 or 2 feet in front of me. Next summer I'll be sure to have a camera handy any time I go out. The hummingbirds seem to be pretty bold, they probably know there is no way you could catch one even if you wanted to.
