The pūteketeke, also known as the Australasian crested grebe, was named New Zealand's Bird of the Century after a campaign spearheaded by comedian John Oliver.

Conservation charity Forest and Bird announced the winner Wednesday after a two-day delay caused by a flood of votes that temporarily crashed the online voting verification system.
Oliver voiced his support for the pūteketeke in the online vote during the Nov. 5 episode of his HBO series, Last Week Tonight.

"No bird on Earth is more deserving of Bird of the Century than this one," Oliver said. "They are weird puking birds with colorful mullets. What's not to love here?"

Forest and Bird said more than 350,000 votes were cast in the Bird of the Century poll, and 290,374 of those went to the pūteketeke. The previous record for most votes cast in the annual contest was 56,733 in 2021.

He was recently on Jimmy Fallon to summarize his campaign. It was hilarious.

John Oliver is actually an Englishman with his own Show, in the US. His mentions about New Zealand are hilarious and always feature some of the more silly sides of our nature.
If you haven't seen his Show, google 'pūteketeke John Oliver', it really is worth a look.
His feature ending up crashing the voting system with the number of votes he generated from around the world, then they had to sort through all the fraud votes and delete them. Someone in the US actually voted over 3000 times for the same bird so we had to wait a couple of extra days for the result.
(am embarrassed to admit I've never heard of a damn pūteketeke, pretty bird tho)
Without John Oliver the competition doesn't usually get much interest here, relative to the total population, but he has really helped this time as his Show made the national News including TV.
When he visited NZ a couple of years ago, he was met at the airport by our then Prime Minister in her own little private vehicle, not a limo. He then did a clip on his Show about that. Hilarious.

My pleasure Tony. My eldest daughter visited NZ a couple yeas ago and met up with her cousins who live there. She really liked it there.
