This is not a composite, it's as taken, processed in Lr, enhanced in Topaz AI (noise removal and enlarged). A rather windy day, just watching the foreground boat turn was quite exciting! I like the composition and colours - and the job Topaz has done - and would be interested to have your thoughts on it. Would you have taken it and how would you have processed it?
The vibrant colors of the water and pops of red and blue in the clothing and boats stand out beautifully against the hazy shoreline. The angle of the sails and the clean lines overall are super eye-catching.
When I enlarged, I was surprised to see faceless bodies, but other details where doesn't seem like there should be. Curiously different from the view as-is on the page, almost a playful filter effect.
Would I have taken the shot? Sure, especially given I never have this kind of opportunity. Don't know how I'd process it, though, without seeing what you got out of the camera
How I would have processed it would have depended on what the original looked like.
Interesting shot Dave. Yes I would have taken it but I'm not sure I would have kept it except for a component in a composite. I don't like the water/land interface and I'm not sure what that what that building is on the right side at water level. Without having the original to work with, I would have done this. I changed the black and white points a little bit, lots of dehaze and cropped out the buildings on the waterline.
I like it. Not your typical sail boat shot. But I do find the haze to be a bit of a distraction. But you may like it with the haze. I think it is purely subjective.
Wow...lots of excitment in this shot! I do like the mist and I do like the action which your camera has caught!
Really nice action. The haze hides the city, which to me is a good thing.
Apologies for the tardy response to all those that have been kind enough to respond to my post - the weekend kinda overtook me!
Instead of adding a glut of replies, I’ll use this one to answer the points raised if I may. Thank you to everyone for their interest.
Firstl off, the subject is not an unusual sight for me as we live close to the sea and get a great variety of passing boats. What I liked about this one is the angles created by the two boats and the colours. I can’t blame Topaz for the loss of faces, this is a small section of the overall shot, and was very noisy. The faces don’t bother me but I could add some if they were important. The mist, Jack, is important - but I really like the other changes you made, they look very natural. What the strange waterline building is I’ve no idea, it’s across the bay in a spot we seldom visit but is adjacent to a row of beach huts, if that’s a clue. Better gone, I agree.
I was thinking out loud rather than expecting a response regarding how others might process the image but take the point several have made - it’s a daft question without posting the original!
The most impressive thing to me is how Topaz has managed to retain the rigging detail whilst enlarging (which they call enhancing, presumably to define the difference between adding pixels and ‘enlarging’ pixels) and denoising the image. Magic!
Thanks again to you all.
As an ex sailor whose never been on a sailboat I can understand what is about or may happen by what is visually shown. IMO, a great action shot and I would hope you would have taken a series of shots. Everything in this image has its own purpose, buildings, haze, etc. Those are not overall important to me in this image, altho they do make up for the overall image of ... "it is what it is", which is an excellent action shot. How would I have processed it? No one knows, not even I but I think you did an excellent job from beginning to finish Dave. I'm sure we will see parts of this image in a composite somewhere down the road or maybe out to sea. LOL

Thanks Dave. There are other shots in the series but they seem a bit mundane - although I was fascinated by the amount of lean the boat managed to recover from as the helmsman tried to turn it! Your processing sounds very much like mine! Not sure about using it in composites, it’s not my usual sort of subject.
