The story of Columbine II, a Lockheed Constellation, which was the very first aircraft designated as Air Force One. The aircraft was used by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, and after being retired from service it was auctioned off. The owner left it sitting in the desert for years and was using it for spare parts until he was notified that it was the first Air Force One. Hopefully the effort to restore The First Air Force One will be a success.

Being restored at Dynamic Aviation, Bridgewater, VA. Had the privileged of seeing and touring it. Not the best pictures as I was not sure if photography was allowed so only had the cell phone.

During my time in the Navy, our Seabee drill team and band toured with the Blue Angels, and their "crew plane" was a C-121 Super Constellation (pre-C130 "Fat Albert"). They'd pick us up at Quonset Point NAS on Thursdays, go to NAS Lakehurst NJ, and pick up the Navy Chuting Stars. We'd then head for wherever the Blues were that weekend, and put on our shows and concerts.

Flying on the Connie was a dream. What an airplane!!

A disingenious claim. No airplane is ever named "Air Force One." The air traffic control call sign, "Air Force One," is only used when the President is actually aboard an Air Force aircraft and it does not matter which type of aircraft it is. On all other flights, the tail number of the aircraft is used as its call sign. Other presidential aircraft preceded Columbine II. Among them were the Dixie Clipper, Sacred Cow, and Columbine I.

Wow the Constellation. Still remember the day my dad going to the US for his advanced training in 1963 and he left on the Constellation (I didn't know its name then). It was a TWA plane. When they started the engines the black smoke scared me.

FYI, Dad had almost 20,000 hours on the TWA Connie and there is a restored one in Kansas City, Mo.. He was a TWA Captain. I happened to fly from O'Hare in Chicago to Kansas City on the last Connie flight on TWA in 1966. It was a great airplane in it's time. Steve Chambers TWA retired Captain
