Recently retired with a disability. Got some horrific health news last month. Rather than sit around we are traveling.
Need help purchasing a new camera capable of supporting my love of street and landscape photography.
Criteria: 1. Has to be budget friendly…not lowest and not highest $. 2. Travel friendly meaning light weight and durable 3. Thinking I’d like the camera body then 2 lens…one for street and one to assist with more reach in landscape. 4. Not really into video capabilities. 5. Must have a viewfinder. 6. I have an iPhone 14 pro which works great until it doesn’t in bright light when you can’t see the screen.
I’m used to low end Nikon DSLRs in the 500 series and canon better point and shoot. My skill level is mid level amateur with on going love to learn more. My existing equipment is beat hence the need to buy something newer.
My goal is to document our travels. I love making Blurb books so the photos are for documenting our travels for the grandkids. I do frame some pictures so definitely capturing quality images is a must.
I have major surgery this coming week and I’m hoping your help will get me motivated to heal more quickly. As soon as I’m cleared we are going until the money wears out or I do.
Sorry if I will not be able to respond to your questions. Hopefully I’ve given you enough to help. I love this site and you all are incredibly giving people. Thank you for all the good tips over the years.
Don’t put off that big trip and forget about the $. I want to see the things I have put off for way too long.

I can't say what is best for you, but for me it is very close to being a smart phone. I knew it was coming but didn't realize how quickly. I stopped printing years ago and now just post on media platforms to share images with friends and relatives.

I will be 77 on my next birthday and have the good fortune of being relatively healthy. Last year I got into my S22 Ultra and realized that considering what I do with images a phone camera covers about 80% of my needs. Since then I have sold off much of my gear except for my Sony A1 and 100-400GM lens.

Recently I purchased a Sony Experia 1 V smart phone which has camera controls and features similar to their dedicated cameras...its not a point & shoot unless you want it to be, even then there are adjustment beyond most phone cameras. Its weakness is long telephoto images, if your standards are high. I suspect that will change soon as the competitors force improvements. Year 2024 may be a stellar year for phone cameras.

I still use the A1 and lens as it has unparalleled IQ and capturing abilities, however it is very conspicuous. At times I feel like a tourist carrying it. Not so with my phone camera, no one questions my reasons for capturing images, as everyone else is doing it too. It's a challenge to use, in some situations, but for me that is part of the charm.

The world is changing and so far I am changing as well, ignoring the idiotic stuff that goes on.

I'm with you Bobby. I've got a R6 II and an RX100VII. Love 'em both for different reasons.

Since you are used to Nikons…a Z50 2 lens kit seems a good choice. Light, 24-375mm 35mm equivalent reach, inexpensive.

Weight wise, the Z50 two lens kit is basically the same as the OM-5 with the 12-100 f4 Pro IS lens. Z50 has no IS except for video. The one kit lens has VR. The OM-5 + 12-100 is 7.5 stops of IS with the 12-100. Although the second kit lens is a little longer than the 12-100 reach, the OM 12-200 would match the two kit lenses (due to variable aperture, no ILIS, and not a Pro lens, the 12-200 is not recommended by me). Z50 kit is two variable aperture lenses and slower than the constant aperture 12-100 f4. Pixel count is the same but sensor shape is not. The Z50 can require 11% cropping for some print sizes while the OM-5 will require no more than 7% cropping for some print sizes. Obviously two lenses are bigger than one lens. I believe the Z50 kit is around $1900 while the OM-5 +12-100 is around $2200. And the Z50 is not weatherproof while the OM-5 is weatherproof. Also, the 12-100 can shoot 1/2 lifesize.

The Z50 and OM-5 are very comparable weight wise. But for $300 more, one does not have to change lenses, one gets a weatherproof camera system, has a minimum 5.5 stops IBIS, one gets a constant aperture Pro lens, one can do 1/2 lifesize closeups, and one will not have to crop the 20mp image as much. To me, that is $300 more dollars well spent.

The Z50 two-lens kit is currently $1195.00 at nikonusa and has a DX sensor.

Sony A7c version one or two...very small...light...full frame.

Lens 1: Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8. Not a pro lens but it's cheap and outstanding on that body from 2.8 onward. There is one for sale on KEH in 'Like New' for around $300 bucks.

Lens 2: Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8. Both lenses are very light and will get you that low light capability and DOF advantages. Both are quite affordable compared to what they give back...to you. There is one at MPB in 'Like New' condition for around $240 bucks.

You'll be very happy with all the still shots with this combo...pretty cheap...very light...full frame low light.

I stand corrected. And although the Z50 body does not have image stabilization except for video, both lenses do have IS. They will not have 5.5 stops IS, but any IS is better than no IS. The DX sensor is still 20mp and the same amount as the OM. But the DX has a ratio of 2:3 versus the OM 3:4. This means that for all the common print sizes, the DX could require 11% cropping to fit some print sizes while the OM could require a maximum 7% crop for some print sizes.

This would mean the difference would be approximately $1000. The OP would have to think about and decide if things like a single Pro lens, weatherproof system, 7.5 dual IS, and 1/2 lifesize imaging would be worth the extra money.
