I recently upgraded our cell phones to the Samsung s23 Ultra. The photos are coming out better than my Canon 80D. I'm sure there are cameras that are better, but they are out of my price range. I like having a great camera that's always with me. I do miss having a viewfinder, but this screen is bright enough for viewing in bright sunlight. So, I'm considering selling my 80D and lenses. Any thoughts on my doing that? Would I regret it later?

Here are a few of the over 500 shots I took on my recent Florida trip and some from my deck after returning. All these were handheld and on full automatic on the phones lowest setting. I haven't tried manual or the 200 MPs yet, but these even look great on our 65" TV. What do you think about the quality of the photos?

Only you can decide if the phone works better but, on its face, the 80-D has about twice the resolution as the phone.

If you were to put some better glass on the Canon, it is unlikely that the phone would be able to match the IQ.

Money is always a concern when it comes to cameras. But consider this for a moment. There might be a time when another generation of photographers can’t appreciate the Canon’s and others have made for this generation. It is better to donate a camera to a high school for kids to learn photography.

Great photos! Thanks!

Nice shots, I'd keep your camera several of the shots are soft.

IT s like driving a 2000 camry or a 2000 MB , the camry is a much better/reliable car at the fraction of the cost , but the MB driver will never agree with that .Same with camera .

Ah, he's a poet and didn't know it but it's okay because your feet are Longfellows.

Ok, I'm confused. I thought my 80D was 24MP and the s23 Ultra was up to 200MP, but I know the glass makes a big difference. I'm not a pro but have many of my photos blown up to 30x20 and hanging on walls. Hopefully the s23 Ultra will be able to also look great.

All the photos I posted were on the phones lowest setting because I wasn't planning on framing them, just for good memories of our trip. The Mt Rainier photos were just for fun. I took some at 200MP of Rainier but they were so large they took up too much space to post anywhere and I wasn't going to print them so I deleted them.

I took these for comparison at the different MPs available but the 50MP and 200MP shots wouldn't load unless I downsized them and that defeated the purpose.

Anyway, I've decided to keep my 80D and maybe someday I'll get better glass for it.

Thanks for your reply.

The Google says it's a 12 mp camera. That aside, it isn't necessarily all about the sheer number of pixels.

Case in point - I have a Nikon D7100 which is a 24 mp crop sensor, I also have a D750 which also a 24 mp. On any day of any week, the 750 will win because the pixels are bigger. They gather more light and are capable of greater dynamic range.

The differences become more pronounced when you push the boundaries of light and range.

Phones are closing the gap but they still have a way to go.

Thanks for your reply.

Some lenses are 12mp like the ones I posted, but it has up to 200 mp. I googled the specs and got this;

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra specs: the basics

Galaxy S23 Ultra

Refresh rate 1 - 120Hz adaptive
Rear cameras 200MP main, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP 3x tele ...

I'm sure your D750 takes great photos. But compared to my current camera the 80D that take great photos, it has been taking better photos even at 12 mp. We wanted to replace our 5-year-old cell phones that we traded in and got the s23 Ultra for $399.00 each. Besides the camera it has an amazing viewing screen and features. It's a great phone overall.

Anyway, I decided to keep the 80D for several reasons; it has a viewfinder, it's easier to steady and shoot, when needed I can hold and shoot with one hand, I like the feel of it, and if I sold it I'd miss it. But to lighten my hiking load I'll use the cell phone. Same with air-travel as we only take carry-on even on long stays.

Thank for that, but I've decided to keep the 80D for now. My thought was when I will decide to let it go, I'll give it to my great-granddaughter that is now 10 and has already taken photos with it and was very careful handling it.
