We had Oreo declawed on the 15th. Brought him home on the 16th and he was bleeding all over! Took him back and they kept him overnight. Home again on the 17th. He seemed okay 'til we went out for Thanksgiving dinner with friends; got home and he was bleeding worse than he did the first time! Took him to an emergcy animal hospital where they put him back on antibiotics and pain medicine and sent him home with an E-collar for a week! His temp. was elevated to 104.5, too. What's a normal temp. for a kitty cat? He's NOT a happy camper and neither are we!!
Oreo in his E-collar
Finally, he settled down!
Oreo's normal temp is from 100 to 102. Just look at those sad eyes, they are saying, 'Why are you doing this to me?'
YOU BIG MEANY
Poor Kitty!! Meany parents.
We had a cat for thirteen years before it passed. We were t hinking about geting another. We asked the Vet how much to declaw the front only. When he told us 200.00 we forgot about that idea.
I guess we should've forgotten it, too, tramsey. It cost $300 to declaw just the front and $198 last night! I do love him soooo much, though, and am glad we have him.
You lucky folks. ny We have a feral cat (born in a wooded pile of logs) that is the most unfriendly cat in the world. I have never had this cat jump in my lap (or any family members lap) in the 19 years we've had her. I think I've hear her purr twice. My wife had her in the SAAB Convertible in a small carrier going to Florida with animal Xanax and she meowed for 600 miles like she was dying. Then she dumped a load in the carrier and my wife was driving in 40 degree weather for 250 miles with the window open after cleaning the carrier.
Count your blessings as I think this 19+ year old cat is never going to go to the next stage of her life.

Declawing is highly discouraged these days, unless there's real justification for doing so--such as an immunocompromised owner, or one on blood thinners, where a scratch could lead to life-threatening illness.
Behavior changes such as increased aggression, vocalization, and chronic pain and lameness are among the reasons cited for avoiding the procedure. I hope your veterinarian explained all that to you up front.
These days, medical grade superglue is often used to 'stitch' the surgical sites, and unfortunately, it DOES often let go too quickly, resulting in a seerous bleed, especially with a cat busily licking at the wounds.
Sorry you had a problem. And never yet met a kitty who liked his e-collar.
Of course he's not happy - how damned happy would you be if your toes and fingers were amputated of their first joint? You should be ashamed of yourself.
I can't believe the only criticism I've read here is to call you a 'meany'.

Well, since you opened the door what would you say?

I hope Oreo recovers from his surgery, sailorsmom, I am sure you are heartbroken, he is one good looking kitty
Thank you so much for your KIND words, Gregory. The words of some others on here, who have no idea of the circumstances, really upset me...and I know they'll be glad to hear they upset me.
Thank you so much, anck1111!

I feel sorry for you sailorsmom and Oreo, I know you had the best in mind for Oreo, and you would never do any thing to harm him. I have read some of the responses and I find some to be reprehensible. Unfortunately we have mean and nasty people in the world, and ocwilson leads the pack. Please don't let her get you down. Rather than worry about Oreos health and healing she has to push her agenda.
Thank you so much, Gregory. Of course I love Oreo so much and would never cause him harm. I know, they'll say, "Yeah, right! You amputated his toes!", but again they don't know the whole story. I'm an animal lover and only want the best for any animal who joins our family. Thank you again!
