Hello, fellow photo-enthusiasts Hope everyone had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving!

My question: Anyone with any experience using the new Tamron 18-270 lens? I am looking for something in that range for my Canon 50D. Also, I see the prices vary a bit, used, refurbished, etc., What is a good price for one?

As always, my sincere thanks!

Monte.

I have had the Tamron 18-270 for two years and am very pleased with it. It's lighter than many other telephoto-zoom lenses, has a lock button to prevent the lens from sliding out to full extension while being carried, and covers a wide enough range of distances that I don't carry other lenses when I'm traveling overseas and so don't have to change lenses for different situations.

Here are a couple of shots showing different distances.

There is also a $100 rebate on the lens good through the end year end (I think).

I use Niklon 28-300 and speak to the range of the lensen not the mfgr. That is a great range - 18 for landscape, 270 for up close. Will it be as good as a dedicated wide angle or prime (long) something - likely not, but you will be pleased with what you get. With that range you can cover most of what you see while walking around

I shoot with a 60D and use the Tamron 18-270 lens 80% of the time. The pics are great. I have taken about 15,000 pics with it and it's still going fine. After using it for a few months I purchsed another one for my son in Long Island NY. He also loves it. Then I got one for my grandson on his 40D. These were my old cameras when I upgraded.(Before you ask, I also gave them lenses with the cameras.

Wow, all the replies have been really favorable. Thanks for yours, now, if I could only figure out what is a good price for the lens (?)

Shooting with a Nikon D-90 I use this lens more than any other lens I own. I have some good Nikon lenses but the Tamron gets the most use by far.

Good shooting

As you may already understand - this lens is a compromise - convienience for image quality. So, if you value convienience over image quality it is a "good" lens. A smaller zoom range lens will give better IQ - dollar for dollar. But in this zoom range, this lens seems to be the benchmark.

Hi, I have the exact same setup you will have if you purchase the Tamron 18-270. I shoot with a Canon 50D also. I got rid of all my old "Kit" lenses and bought the Tamron last Spring. I was going on a cruise to Spain, Italy, and Greece. I wanted to lighten my load, and have a good all round zoom lens. I downloaded my photos every day, and am really impressed with the quality, and clairity of the photos. If I were in your boots I would buy the lens new. Tamron has a 6 year warranty on their lenses. I've noticed that the lens has a pretty good resale value. So, for some reason you don't like it you can sell it and get a good bit for it as used. Maybe, you can get a photo store to allow a test period of a few days to test the lens. I use mine as my walk-around lens.

Monte, go to the photos below and click on "Briace's new lens". It shows how good the Tamron 18-270 lens is.
