We loved all the '50's and early '60's serial westerns. My only issue with the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans show was that his sidekick (Pat something?) drove Nellie the jeep and the bad guys drove cars while Roy and Dale were on horseback. It just seemed odd to me when all the other westerns, Hoppalong Cassidy, Cisco Kid, Lone Ranger, etc. clearly took place in the old "wild west." Did anyone else ever question that as a kid?

I had a Hoppalong Cassidy bike, black with white handlebar fringes, horn button on the side, & 2 cap guns in holsters. I loved that bike. Learned to ride on it.
Do any of you remember taking colored chalk, putting it in socks, smashing it & on Halloween going around chalking your friends?
How about playing the card game knucks (with sadistic friends)?

I think that the ‘50s in the U.S. were the best times to grow up in the history of the planet. The ‘60s for being a teen (Beatles, etc).

I got to meet Roy and his wife when I was a teenager.
I worked at a Roy Roger's restaurant, and they both came in one day.
Super friendly people...

That Double R Bar burger they had was awesome.

Yes, we did have "cap guns," and you are right, we did not become serial killers. In my "gang," (there were 11of us, 6 boys and 5 girls) we would trade off being good guys and bad guys, and the girls were always "nurses." And yeah, we did have clean fun. But alas, different era!!!!

Yea and after you got shot you had to count to 50 while the shooters could get away and you could start all over again. Really fun after dark. Where did it go?

Have his autograph on a small piece of paper. Caught Roy at a vegetable stand buying a bag of corn while I was a young kid, visiting California with family.

We got innovative with our rolls of caps. Instead of running them through our cap guns one at a time, we got the brilliant idea we could just hit the whole roll on the sidewalk with a hammer. Kaboom! Like a firecracker, hurt the ears, made a lot of smoke.
(I heard Roy would stand for hours at his museum just shaking hands with visitors, long into his old age.)

After reading your post, I can see that my childhood was not complete. Never did the chalk thing and never played knucks. I did walk a mile to and from school and later rode my bike. No one ever worried that I would be kidnapped or beaten up. My daughter in CA now transports her kids to and from school and would never allow them to walk. If she did, someone would probably report her to the authorities. You and I enjoyed childhood at a great time.
