Lightroom 13 is here!

About 1PM Pacific Time the Adobe update system launched. Included was Lightroom Classic 13.

The newest cool tool is a slider to induce bokeh. We used to have to spend gobs of money on huge lenses to blur the background.

I started with Lightroom 4 and the original Sony RX100 because it was small and included capturing RAW images. My initial "training" was with on line tutorials from Adobe's Senior, Worldwide Evangelist, Julieanne Kost. I owe her a lot. My love of photography died when I lost a cherished custom built darkroom and film use declined. Between family and work, the Nikons rested on the shelf.

With Lightroom 4, I rediscovered the thrills of processing.

It continues to be a great ride. Thank you Julieanne and Adobe.

The subscription software is constantly updated, with annual version number updates, all made available to the paid subscription base. No one pays for any specific point-release nor annual version update.

Yes. Same price.

There has been a minor recent change. In the $10/month package is Photoshop. In Photoshop there are some new "AI" features than need processing on Adobe servers. You get an allowance off what should be more than enough cycles of the new tool. If you run out during the month, you will have the option to buy more.

Remember that the $10/per month plan is an annual contract where you can pay up front or monthly. It is may be painful to cancel before your year's contract is finished.

DO NOT INSTALL Lightroom Classic 13.0 IF you use Negative Lab Pro plug-in! There is a serious bug in LrC 13.0 that causes NLP to fail. If auto update has already installed 13, then turn OFF auto updates and re-install 12.5.

According to Nate, who writes Negative Lab Pro, LrC 13.0 is gonna be great for NLP users when Adobe comes up with a fix...

Here's a little more detail about the new features, from the Lightroom Queen:

"Now let's look at the new Lightroom features.

Classic & Desktop: Point Color - like an advanced HSL control, this gives more precise control over changing specific colors. For example, reducing red cheeks without affecting other skin tones.
Classic, Desktop & Mobile: Lens Blur - using AI, a shallow Depth of Field effect can be added to photos. This is especially useful on photos captured using small sensors (such as mobile phones).
Classic, Desktop & Mobile: HDR Editing - with more screens now able to work in HDR, you can now take advantage of the higher dynamic range.
Classic & Desktop: DNG Compression - Convert to DNG adds the ability to produce dramatically smaller files for the Enhance tool, Merge to HDR and Panorama (Classic only... Desktop to follow). It uses JPEG XL compression rather than JPEG. The quality is just as good, and the space savings are huge.
Desktop: Local file browsing (as already seen on Mobile).
Classic: Preset Filter - to easily find the preset you're looking for.
For Lightroom Classic, the new version requires a catalog upgrade - details and steps are all in our blog.

There are a number of other smaller enhancements, too. See our blog What's New in Lightroom Classic 13.0, Mobile & Desktop (October 2023)? for more details and System requirements."

I don't have any plugins installed. As usual, I'm having fun playing with the new tools. My auto updates are off, I did it on purpose.

For those who do...

Negative Lab Pro is essential for what I'm doing right now, processing old B&W negatives into digital files. I got interrupted yesterday by auto-update and had to re-install LrC 12.5. I wasted more time figuring out what happened than anything... Nate at NLP sent out an email late in the day explaining the issue and the temporary fix.

I THOUGHT I had auto-update OFF. I know I do, now!

I would have thought that NLP or any App that uses LR/PS would/should have participated in a beta test to avoid such a problem.

See the text of the email below. (from Nate at Negative Lab Pro):

"Hi friends, an important notice for all users of Negative Lab Pro:

Do NOT upgrade to Lightroom Classic v13.0 just yet…

"Why shouldn't I upgrade to LrC v13.0?"

There is a bug with the SDK in LrC v13.0 that prevents Negative Lab Pro (and other development-based plugins) from making changes to tone curves. Until this bug is addressed by Adobe, all versions of Negative Lab Pro will NOT work in LrC v13.0.

"When will this be fixed?"

Adobe is aware of the issue and it has been escalated internally, so fingers crossed that it can be fixed soon. (This sort of thing has happened once before, and Adobe handled it very quickly).

I will send out an update email when I can verify that this has been fixed, and it is safe to update LrC.

"I've already updated to LrC v13.0... what should I do?"

For the time being, you will need to downgrade back to Lightroom Classic v12.5 to continue using Negative Lab Pro:

> Open the Adobe Creative Cloud app
> Make sure “Apps” is selected in the left pane
> Find the “Lightroom Classic” app, and click the “…” on the right side
> Select “Other Versions”, then install v12.5
> If "auto-update" is on, you will want to turn it off so it doesn't reinstall v13.0: Go to "Creative Cloud > Preferences > Apps" and make sure Auto-Update is off.

or reply to this email (please note it may take a few days for me to get back to you via email)

The good news is that once v13 is fixed, it has some features that will be great to use with Negative Lab Pro! Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Cheers,
-Nate"

If you read the forum article, it appears that v13.1 of LrC is expected to bring the fix… in December.

I am finding Lightroom 13.0.1 is working for me.

A couple of YouTube video are out on this new release:

What's NEW in Lightroom Classic ver 13 – LOTSA STUFF? -- Anthony Morganti
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFoUO-U7gTM

And this one by Rob Shea. He is known for IR processing. But on New Point Color tool, he explains it using full color images and does a really great job. Doesn't even mention IR processing until the last couple minutes.
