Favorite Panama Waterfall

Vienna74 Loc: Bountiful, Utah now Panama

Panama is the 5th wettest country in the world, and it has a lot of rugged mountains. That combination results in a lot of waterfalls. Unfortunately, the rugged mountains make most of the great waterfalls difficult to get to. Most are reached via 4WD plus a long hike. My favorite waterfall is therefore a member of a small subset; it is easy to get to.

This is Chorro Las Yayas, near the small town of El Copé in Coclé Province. This was a memorable visit for me. I had just moved my tripod closer to frame up another view when I noticed a gust of wind. I looked up and there was a massive additional plume of water, just to the left of the one on the right. Very muddy. Clearly there had been a torrential cloudburst somewhere higher in the mountains. I had set up my tripod at the forward edge of the rocks in the first photo. In less than 30 seconds it stood in 4 inches of water. The waterfall at the left of the first photo, the only one in the second photo, probably tripled in volume and another waterfall appeared to the left of it. I was too busy getting out of the way to take another photo!

From there I moved up the path to the top of these waterfalls, where I shot the last photo. This is part of a set of falls above the ones in the first two photos. By then the water was a sea of mud. An old friend on mine would have said a lot of land was changing hands.
