My computer cannot find (recognize) my Memory Card.

I'm not sure where to post this so I guess admin. will put it where it belongs. Last month, out of the blue, my Dell SSD computer would not/could not display my MC when I put it in the slot to download images I took with my D7200. I've been doing this for years with no issues and when I tried to import these new images, using Microsoft Photos like I always do, it wouldn't display my Nikon D7200 prompt to start the import procedure. It still shows my Toshiba ext. drive like it always did but not the Nikon D7200 prompt. Also, when I use the slideshow feature the photos seem to have been enlarged so that a lot of my heads and feet are cut off. (I know questionable syntax.) I think MS did some kind of update last month which is the source of my hassle. I called a computer geek friend, and he suggested a 7 or 8-step procedure which is really labor-intensive. I recently took some shots with my iPhone 12 and he advised me to get a USB-C cable, which I did, and the computer recognized this I Phone immediately but not the Nikon MC. I'm seeking help for this issue. I don't know what to do. I'm pretty much computer illiterate so if you have any suggestions, please keep it simple. I downloaded Photos Legacy but that didn't resolve my problem. TIA, MM

I have tried older MC's and they didn't work either.

Could be the reader.
Have you tried shutting down the computer (power off) and restarting?
Do you have another computer in which you can try the card?
Do you by chance have an external card reader?

I recently had that problem with a card slot that hadn't been used for a while. I ran a card in and out 5 or 10 times and it came back to life.

I tried shutting the PC down earlier, but I'll try that again. And I do have a laptop but that takes some sort of MC adapter but I'll put the MC in the adapter then in the laptop and see what happens.

I use a Dell laptop and the Sd card reader disappeared. I now use a usb to sd adapter. Don’t have any problems with this setup

I had a problem in the past when both my CF and SD card slots on my Dell with Windows 10 were disabled. I needed to find and update a driver to re-enable these slots. But, that was more than 2 years ago, if not longer.

Another issue I occasionally have is that I need to 'eject' and re-insert the SD card a few times repeatedly until the card is recognized. If you open a Window File Explorer window and click on "this PC" on the left side of the File Explorer window, you should see all the available 'drives'. The SD or CF drive should be displayed. If you're using a USB card reader, and that reader is installed, you probably have a driver problem where you can google the product name / version and search for problems / driver updates.

If your SD / CF drive does appear, but when you insert the card, and it doesn't 'show' the card, try the following:

a, Double-click the SD / CF card "icon" listed in the File Explorer Window. It should have an alphabetic drive letter, like E / F / G / and so forth.
b, A windows pop-up should appear saying to 'insert' a card into that drive.
c, Insert the camera memory card and <Cancel> on the popup window.
d, If the card isn't immediately recognized, pull it out and push back in and move to step e.
e, Return to step a, above and repeat this cycle. If after 3 or 4 cycles, the PC still doesn't 'see' the card, this isn't the solution. But, as I write these steps, my Win10 SD card reader again wouldn't recognize an SD card sitting here on my desk. I pulled and re-inserted the card, and clicked on the drive in the Devices and Drives list of "this PC" until the card was read and the files available / displayed.

have you tried entering "this pc" in the search area? For whatever reason, this is the only way i can access my cards

I have had a similar issue recently connecting the Z7 to Windows 10 via cable. Rebooting the PC fixed the problem easily.

I have had the same problem from time to time. I use windows pcs. The problem usually is that there is a loss of signal between the card and the computer. More specifically, between the card and the port on the computer where the card reader is plugged in.

Rebooting is the first thing to do. If that does not resolve the problem, make sure the cable on the card reader is fully and properly engaged, on both ends--the card reader and the pc. If it is, the pc should recognize the card reader with a drive letter, like D or E.

If it does not recognize the card reader, the culprit is usually the cable. I always have a backup cable with me. And not all cables are created equally. Changing the cable for me has resolved the problem. Sometimes the problem might be the port on the pc. Wiggling the cable at the end that fits into the pc may resolve the issue.

Then I insert the card into the card reader. Usually the pc will tell you the card is recognized by changing the drive letter or some other way.

If that does not resolve things, change out the card reader.

Don't choose Shut Down on the power menu. Choose Restart. This resets all settings. Shut Down actually saves settings for a faster boot next time.
