BBF and Aperture Setting

I assign BBF to my AE-AF lock button on my D7200. Does the aperture lock in with the focus point or does it change when you press the shutter if you recompose before the shot? I hope I’m asking the right question.

Exposure lock and focus lock are different issues and require different settings in your camera.

Aperture is an exposure setting and will be independent of the focus point - but not necessarily independent of the camera's evaluation of the required exposure. In manual mode or aperture priority mode, the only thing that will change the aperture setting is you.

Or are you asking the question the wrong way round?

If you (or the camera) change aperture after achieving focus lock, do you need to re-acquire focus lock?

The answer is changing focal length would affect the focus lock but changing the aperture will only affect depth of field. Recomposing without changing focal length shouldn't affect focus lock.

I would imagine they are separate.
BBF on my Canon ONLY does focusing <lock>.
Aperture is set/locked when I press the shutter half way.
That's why I separated focus lock from the shutter button, I want them separate.

I have to read the manual again when I go home. I don't have the D7200. I think the D7200 doesn't have the AF-ON button separate so if you assign the AE/AF lock button as AF-ON for BBF then it won't lock the exposure any more. So if your camera in an exposure mode that the camera can automatically change the aperture like in P or S mode the aperture can change.

Thanks, you hit the nail on the head. I don’t have an AF-ON button so the aperture does change. I usually shoot in P mode.

Back button focus locks only your focus.

Assuming you've properly reprogrammed the assigned function to the relevant camera buttons .... Who knows, exactly, what our OP has performed?
