Gloves for Iceland

I am planning a trip to Iceland and Scotland, boat and land, in May-June next year and am keen to take many photos. The weather is likely to be anything. Coming from a sub-tropical climate I do not have any experience with cold weather gloves. I would welcome comment or recommendations especially around whether the gloves which have an opening section that exposes fingers for photography (photographer's gloves ) are useful. The internet is full of options!

Thanks

I brought gloves to Iceland once, used them once. That was in August, so not sure what May/June would be like. I brought an unlined waterproof windbreaker (Columbia) on top of a fleece jacket.

I was in Iceland in May of 1997. It was very windy and made gloves very important. It was very much cold made by the intense winds. I was a guest with the USAF for the week I was there to Photograph the US F-15.

I was all over Iceland in July of this year and found that I didn't need gloves. The weather was in the 50's most days and in the low 40's at night, so nothing too drastic. Having said that, I did take gloves "just in case". I got them a few years ago at B&H - they have a little padding on the palms and the fingertips of the thumbs and index fingers would flip off and on as needed.

We went in August a couple of years ago. Nasty wind, snow and ice. Weather gear including gloves a must. The weather is very chargeable, sometimes rapidly.

Below is the link to the ones I use. If I need a bit more warmth, I simply wear a pair of cheap thin knit gloves underneath. I just cut the tip off of of the index finger and thumb of the glove I'll be wearing on my dominant hand. I live in NJ along the coast & regularly shoot birds and wildlife in our NJ winters. I've tried all sorts of thicker and MUCH more expensive gloves, and this is what's worked best for me for almost 10 years. FWIW, we head back to Antarctica next month, and I've already made sure I won't be forgetting to pack these gloves. These are the gloves that went with me to Iceland in September of 2016. It was cold, windy, wet, foggy, and generally miserable weather. They worked out very well. As for sizing - my ring finger is size 9 and I wear a medium in this glove.

EDIT - bring rain pants & a rain jacket with attached hood as well as a wool hat.

You want waterproof everything, gloves, coat, pants, and shoes. Dress in layers. The weather can be very variable. I was there at the end of July, so it was not super cold, but there was plenty of rain. Bring protection for your camera and cellphone as well.

You’ll find that shooting gloves for hunters may be less costly than photographers gloves

I'll definitely second the rain protection for your camera & lens as well as the cell phone. For rain protection for my camera & lens combo, I use the OpTech brand. I forget what it's called exactly. Just type "OpTech rain cover" in the B&H search bar. They are clear, inexpensive, weight "nothing", and come in 2 or 3 lengths.

I have recently been to Antarctica and used gloves suitable for photographgers from the Heat Company. Brilliant product and highly recommended.

It appears OP's answer is "maybe". Bring them anyway.

A good pair of gloves can take a frustrating moment of photography and make it comfortable.

You should also consider a pair of glove clamps. They attach to your coat or belt and keep them from getting lost. I got my pair at Grainger but you can find them on the internet

I'm in Iceland right now. I brought gloves but haven't used them yet. A few times walking around I wished that I had worn them. Mostly, just remember to wear layers and keep your ears warm. The first time I visited IS, I brought waterproof rain gear, but never used that either. If it's raining that hard, you won't be out walking around. Rain + 6C + wind = stay in the car.
