Did you read the story? A hit and run driver knocked the woman into the path of the driverless car. It would have been the same result if the car had a driver. In fact, it said the driverless car braked aggressively, maybe more so than a human driver would have.

It would depend on the driver. Some would probably do worse than the driverless if someone were thrown in front of their car.
