My dad was in a troop ship off Omaha Beach. 6-6-44 a day that will live in infamy. He came home, too, and never traveled by ship again.

Inspiring set Taff22, thanks for posting. It will certainly not surpass the real battlefield visit but if you ever have the chance visit the World War II Museum in New Orleans. It's well worth the visit. Allow just about a whole day.

My wife and I just got back from there and it was difficult to imagine what actually went on. The beach was so nice it was hard to visualize something like that actually happened. We also went to Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany which was overwhelming and effects you deeply, but it was the same. Hard to get it in your mind what terrible things happened and the suffering people went through.

Yes it is difficult to imagine it, and I found the cemetery visits more emotional, especially as we had a piper with us! I too have been to Dachau and Bergen-Belsen when I was stationed in Germany. Sad to say we don't seem too learn.
